Hi everyone -

I'm posting on here because I know the psers are thorough researchers and there are a handful on here who know a lot about cameras, myself included to a point, although lately I've just been using my canon sd1200.

We recently had our Nikon D40 (with kit lens attached), fixed nikon 35mm lens (great by the way and highly recommended) and the 55-200 vr zoom lens stolen. Actually they took my son's entire backpack including some other stuff, but this was the most valuable obviously.

This was mainly his camera (he's a teenager by the way), although we shared it, he used it all the time. Like all the time. Everyone knew he is a photographer and other kids actually ask him when they need photos. He's actually quite talented at it and even had business cards made up, although he never made any money, just doing it for experience. All his friends are really upset for him and he's upset too of course.

Besides the obvious disappointment and anger in all this - wtf is wrong with people? that's another thread topic, assuming we get any money from insurance, what would be your choice for another nikon slr? We have still the flash left and a fixed 50mm which did not autofocus on the d40. I'm pretty unfamiliar with the models now but he doesn't want the standard consumer model because this is such a passion for him. Although our budget is really limited, especially if we don't get anything from insurance, so not sure how high up we could go really.

Right now he's leaning towards maybe looking into a used D200 body.

People are really awful, I''m so sorry he lost such a valuable item. You can get a used D200 for a pretty price nowadays since the D300 and D90 are more commonplace. Take a look at craigslist if you are comfortable with testing it thoroughly before money exchanges hands, and places like Adorama and B&H Photo for refurbished camera bodies.

Cameras are such a target for theft. My daughters point and shoot was stolen last year at her high school sports awards banquet.
She just got a replacement last month.
After much research, she settled on the Nikon d3000. There were some nicer features on other Nikon models, but this is plenty of camera for a teenager.
We found the best price on Amazon. They can operate at such a lower margin of profit that they beat all prices.
It actually came from sixth avenue electronics, but the price through Amazon was much better than their website price.

Also, Monkey Pie and some other posters here were very helpful to me during our search. Thank you, MonkeyPie.

If he liked the D40 so much have you considered replacing it with that. I''ve been looking at getting one. They have refurbished ones on adorama

I don't know anything about cameras but I wanted to throw out a different recommendation: Eye-Fi Wireless SD Cards. If your camera is lost/stolen at least you will have the pictures you took. Also, many people wind up with pictures of the person who took the camera, 99% of the time they take pictures of themselves.
