After a few hours of searching for a true red ruby, that "speaks" to me, I have given up my search, and after reading a few past threads about red spinels, am thinking about going that route. I was hoping for a stone with really true, rich velvety red color, and a lot of the rubies are pinkish, or have a lot of silk that make them (in my opinion) not as pretty as one that would be much clearer.

I found a couple over at cherry-picked, but it seems to me that most of their stones on their site are always sold, or mabe I''m just that slow? A couple of the red spinels are very true to the color I would like to see.

example: http://cherrypicked.com/Gallery/Score.aspx?ItemID=1352 (yes, I am computer challenged and cant post pictures!)

I am looking for something in the 3ct range, with a true, rich red color. It will be set with a diamond pave halo and pave band. Where should I start? I checked out ajsgems.com, cherry picked, ????

I found a nice ruby on twindiamond.com http://www.twin-diamonds.com/gemstone/3477.htm and I really like the sparkles of red, but 21k is a little pricey for me, since I already have an engagement ring being made. Plus, I still need to fill up my truck with gas!

Please someone point me in the right direction!

I had a gemstone custom selected/cut for me from daniel at customgemstones.com
He is very reasonably priced and cuts his own stones.

Just for fun...here is the link to one of michael m. stones...too big and not a spinel, but soooooo pretty, thought you might want to drool with me. He is also someone that might chime in and help you.

You might also check out www.palagems.com ...they seem to have a nice assortment of red spinels. They''re wholesailers and don''t publish prices, but I''m sure any vendor/jeweler could find out prices and call in a stone for you.

I''ve heard that one thing to try to avoid in red spinels is brownish undertones.

Here''s a picture of what looks like a nice one from Palagems.

This isn''t quite the red red red you''re looking for? But I prefer it. Scared to ask how much this would cost.

palagems and good spinel is not exactly inexpensive.....but compared to that ruby from richard, it would probably seem to be!

ps i love both reds, but that ruby is my kind of red....but how many thousands do you think it is?! i spoke to richard a month or so ago and he has a .71 ruby for $2,300 and a .80 for $1,600. given the size and quality of this one you know the price per carat has got to be very very high.

I think I remember seeing that Richard's three-carat ruby is like $60k. Didn't he say it was one of the best he'd seen though? I used to think that the nice 3 carat spinel on Genis' site was silly expensive. But look at the market lately, and now it's approaching reasonable

. You can probably do better than $12k for a nice one, but red-red spinel will not be inexpensive.

Widget's comment about brown reminds me that buying from paper I wouldn't have bought my last red spinel. AGL says it's 40% O/Br. But at the same time it gets 4/70 color (and vg overall) which is pretty darned good; it looks fantastic.

You can check with Bill or Elke Vance at Vance Gems.(800) 400-GEMS or Joe at Amazon Imports(800) 888-Gems. I have purchased spinel from both of these top notch dealers.
