Red shirt dye transferred to shorts-Help!

My son went to a baseball game, bought a red shirt, put it. It rained. So the dye bled onto the khaki shorts. I've looked on line at various remedies, and tried soaking in vinegar and cold water to no avail. I thought I'd ask you all before I go through a bunch of different tests, to see if anyone has experience with this. I would be grateful.
I just bought him the shorts, and just got a stain out of them right before the game.

There is Rit Color Remover but the shorts may not be khaki when done!

I have had some success using Oxyclean Versatile Stain Remover. But if there is a lot of red, it might not work. Might be worth a try.

Thanks pearlsngems. There is not a ton of red, it's like in a couple lines in the front where it touched when he was seated, and they aren't deep red. They are also a darker khaki and that helps. I have seen recipes for Oxyclean, that might be safer to try first. But I figured it was worth a shot to ask anyway.

Since you presumably haven't put it in the dryer yet, try oxyclean in a wash cycle in warm water. Maybe try shout first or pretreat with laundry detergent on the "red lines". Works when I accidentally wash purple or red with stuff (in warm, not cold) and get bleed over.

Try making up a paste with the Oxy stain remover powder, bit of added water and “paint it on” the stain areas and let it sit and dry. Then try a re wash to see if that helps. It might take a couple of attempts but you should be able to get rid of most the red. Red is a beast of a colour when it “runs”.

Thanks guys! No, I knew not to put it in the dryer. I've been wanting to try Oxyclean anyway, so I will just buy some instead of trying to make my own. (both the regular and stain remover) Will let you all know how it comes out. Thanks again.

I was going to suggest oxyclean as well. Using cold water soak and hang to dry. You may need to rinse and repeat. Dry cleaning won’t help either since water (rain) made it bleed, you need water to remove. Good luck.

I am happy to report I got the dye out. I bought the OxiClean powder that can be used both as a stain remover (by soaking) and in the wash as well. I used the most they said to use when soaking, but, they said in warm water and I was afraid to do that so I used cold and just made sure it all dissolved. Overnight soak and voila!

When dissolving powders for cold water wash, put the powder in a cup and add warm water. Then I put the dissolved detergent mixture in the cold water wash.

I am glad you got it out Ellen. I just saw your thread and was going to say to soak it overnight or longer. Occasionally, when making a quilt, I have had some dye transfer in the wash. I take it out and soak it in the bathtub sometimes for more than a day. Sometimes I use oxyclean, sometimes dawn dish soap. I have always been able to remove the dye using this method. Then I rinse using a dye fixative.
