Recutting Aquamarine?

I inherited a beautiful ring (I''ll post in the next few days) that was my Grandma''s ering. It looks to be an aquamarine (it''s extremely light blue) and maybe about 2 carats or so. It is set in platinum with double claws...just gorgeous. Two of the four corners have been chipped. Is it possible to have it recut? Is it worth it? I would love to wear it as an everyday ring.

It should be possible to repair the chips - that wouldn''t even be a full fledged ''recut'' - unless you''ve got some large cracks. This shouldn''t be very expensive either. If it is worth for you to have this ring restored to original state, this is what counts.


Any chance the stone might be a recent replacement of an ex-diamond or something? If not and the ring is old enough... well, here''s a story: Old platinum jewelry with very light blue stones may also contain natural blue topaz - something nearly extinct today because of the usual color treated topaz. natural ones are virtually always very, very light - but it is a nice thing with a story, IMO. I''ve had the luck to see incredible old jewelry with light blue topaz stones held in diamonds and platinum lace work including the first original Faberge piece I ever got to touch - and the impression that this is a respectable gem remains... Pretty odd given the current price, but who cares ?

The ring is probably at least 100 years old...I would think. It originally belonged to my Grandpa''s mother. It is a simple style..yet detailed. The stone is so light blue it is almost white. I would love if they could fix it because it is gorgeous. I will try to post some pictures tomorrow.

Is it possible to polish out the chips. Of course not seeing it it''s hard to say. Please post some pics, I''d love to see it.
