Hello everyone this is my ist post however I have been reading and learning ALOT since last month when I found you all. I have aprox 1.60 diamond that is 7.50mm-7.52mm VVS2 in an i/j color and i suspect that it is not a wonderful cut. I paid for an independant appraisal before i started reading your site. My question is what can I do to see if the appearance could be improved by being re cut and should i send the stone to be certified by ags or gia to see what I really have here, the stone is set in a pretty setting that i understand it would need to be removed from before i could do anything with it. i was waiting to hear about the new gia cut grades before I made any choices. I live in South Florida . so what do you all suggest?
thank you from a newbie

what did the appraiser say about the cut?

thank you for the reply Belle. The appraisal does not say anything about the cut just 1 round brilliant cut diamond measuring 7.50-7.52 x 4.65mm weighing aprox 1.60 carats, of aproximately VVS2 clarity and I/J color. then goes on to discribe the setting.

a well cut 1.60 ct should be about 7.60-7.65 mm.so your stone isn''t that far off.before you decide to recut, you should do a sarin or helium scan and see what the report "specs" say.

as df suggested, your first step would be to find out more about the measurements and overall cut on your stone. i would recommend that you consider sending it to rich sherwood in sarasota for an evaluation.

thank you both for your input for a sarin or helium scan do I need to have the stone removed from the mounting 1st?

Thank you for letting me know what my next step is. I understand that if I were to sell the stone I would get aprox 1/2 what was paid for it and it, Am I correct in my guess that a good recut would cost much less that repurchasing a new stone of similar quality but an excellant cut and somewhat smaller size?
Have any of you has a diamond recut ? do any of you have experience with diamond cutters and what the price would be ? Or who is available to do fabulous recut to bring this baby up to speed?
I appreciate all of your help as i am new to this. This stone is rather large for me so some los of size would be fine especially to gain fire flashes and scintillation. I wear size 4.25 ring so w/ the side stones it really looks quite large on my hand.
Thanks again.

Could be. You would need to ask a cutter - in fact, that is the only way to know if it is worth recutting. I don''t know what scanning, certifying or anything else would help any better than just sending the ring and asking ''what should I expect''?

Eight Star does recut stones, but does not discuss options - the result will be an Eight Star diamond regardless of size. Tough luck if that means half of the weight gone
32.gif
As far as I remember the fee was 1k/ct... but usually the loss of value is from weight loss, especially if the finished weight goes below a critical point (this time, there is a jump at 1.5 cts).

Have any of you has a diamond recut ?

Not me, but there were a couple by Eight Star (can''t remember names) and Infinity Diamonds (ordered by "Stephan") and one more with a local jeweler (recounted by "Art Nouveau"). There must have been others.

do any of you have experience with diamond cutters and what the price would be ? Or who is available to do fabulous recut to bring this baby up to speed?

I don''t know if the recut by Infinity was a one off or not. You could ask... Paul Sledgers posts frequently here. Infinity Diamonds make a H&A and AGS0 princess cuts... but I would definitely ask if this stone could be bettered with less radical change (and loss).
Hope this helps a bit.

Thank you Ana. your post was very helpful. I know I need to start somewhere I just want to to make the best choice available to me and have as few people physically fiddle with the stone as possible. I would love to have a super ideal or the best possible cut for the stone that I have. As i mentioned i am willing to give up some size for more sparkle.

this stone is paid for so paying abit more to really make it sing sounds like the way I will go.
i have been reading some of the other threads on re cuts and this is VERY educational.

Obviously I have learned so much just in this past month of reading here too bad i was not as educated when the stone was purchased. Live and learn.
It seems in my case a recut will be the form that my upgrade comes in then a beautiful setting with a couple of beauties to compliment on the sides

Can you suggest the names diamond recutters used in this community that have proven track record?

also...Who should i have remove the stone from the mounting? that sounds like the very 1st step Thanks in advance jz

If I were you, the first thing I would do is buy an ideal scope to get a better sense of how well or badly your diamond is cut:

ideal scope

thank you Dancing Fire . your recut looks like it was a great success!
I was reading up on recuts and was pleased to see you were happy with your results. Did you have sarins and other readings done on the stone before you sent it to Wink?
The infinity cutters are in Belgium if I recall is that correct?
How long did the process take and aprox how much $$ are we talking ? Our diamonds are similiar weight did Wink determine who would be best to do the recut? was it based on the configuation of the stones specs or the reputation of infinity?

Ana suggested having 8 star cut the stone how would they compare?
They are in Calif correct?

Also has anyone on the site had a recut by the people at acut above? Do they do recuts does anyone know or have experience with them?
Thank you all again for your assistance the idea of sending this stone to someone I have personally never met possibly in another country and hoping for noticable improvement
is ... well exciting
jz THANKS EVERYONE I REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP !

There are actually a lot of vendors who recut stones. Many stones get chipped and need recutting. How good of a job they do for what you want is another question. Most cutters are not producing "super ideal" diamonds. I have had several of the respected pricescope vendors tell me that they gennerally cannot depend on a local cutter to produce a superideal cut diamond (and in fact have sometimes gotten back diamonds that look worse than what was sent in). Note that I once looked into the concept of buying a "used" diamond and having it recut.

Personnally - If I were looking to get a stone recut I would involve Wink Jones ( www.winkjones.com ). He deals with both 8* and Infinity and could have both companies evaluate and price the recut. In the meantime you could check out how each looks - and then decide if you want the higher brillance of an Infinity or the greater fire of an 8*.

Of course, an evaluation of the stone may reveal stress or flaw problems that preclude any major recutting. The first part of that evaluation could occur with the diamond in whatever setting it is now in. However, in the end - the diamond will have to be removed from the setting for a full evaluation.

Lost track of this thread...

But no problem, really since I would have also mentioned Infinity Diamonds. And if you wanted the stone reset, it makes sense to go through one of the jewelers working with them who could also provide the extra diamonds of matching cut (can''t get much better than having them from the same cutter, ca it

) and custom work you might wish for.

My 2c..

One item rarely mentioned with recutting that I should point out. I admit this is rare - but it can happen and you should know up front. Should the stone shatter in the cutting process - the cutter is not responsible. You will have lost your stone. One of the reasons for evaluating a diamond up front is to identify in advance the stones that could shatter - but this is not a 100% guarantee. Remember, this is quite rare - but it does happen. Personally, I''d have no problem taking the risk as it is so rare.

Hello again every one. Well I finally took the next step and sent my E ring to Rich Sherwood in Sarasota Fl. Rich did a Fab Appraisal for me. Here are the specs on my stone. THANKS RICH!!!
It is 1.59Ct
7.54-7.57x4.53
60.0 % depth
12.8 % Crown Height
34.0* crown angle
61.9 % table
43.5 % pavilion depth
41.1* pavilion angle
pointed culet
0.08-0.17 mm girdle
very good polish
very good symmetry

the egl usa report of VVS2 which Rich verified as correct by Ags/Gia standards the report says the color is I but Rich tested it out as a K by Gia/ ags standards. The egl report says it is an Ideal make. well you decide ...Rich asys it has a very good ideal scope ( as opposed to excellent)
So I know aLOT more from reading up since my last post on this topic. And STILL I dont know how much the appearance of the stone will improve.
If I have the Stone Recut to Ags 0 hearts and arrows. Can some of you with more experience Helph me out on this some more. I greatly appreciate your help.
Thank you all in advance and also for what I continue to leard from the other posts here at ps.
Thanks!
Joni

I would say that, if you''re going to sell it, don''t have it recut. Most people out there don''t appreciate what an ideal cut is, and will pay more for a big diamond. Now if you were going to keep it and wear it, that would be another story.

Hi Joni. It was a lot of fun figuring out a recut analysis on your 1.59. Thanks for the opportunity.

A couple thoughts about "how much" the appearance of your diamond would improve with recutting. Currently your diamond is an AGS 3, or AGA 2A make, with a "very good" as opposed to "excellent" IdealScope image and visual presentation. It has minor to moderate leakage in the table area along with minor to moderate leakage in the upper girdle facets of the stone. This "edge" leakage makes it appear very slightly "washed out" along the edge, which consequently makes it appear very slightly smaller than it's actual diameter. Perhaps "smaller" is not the right word. Very slightly "anemic" along the edge is a better description.

First, the face up appearance should become a little lighter and brighter upon recutting, with more edge-to-edge brilliance and a little less leakage in the table area. From my experience, this might translate also to a one grade better appearance in color, with more life overall.

Second, the contrast pattern would be improved with recutting. Right now the contrast pattern is slightly subdued, and recutting to ideal proportions, especially with precision Hearts & Arrows symmetry would improve the contrast (light-dark light-dark) pattern, as well as the star (arrows) pattern.

There is a 50/50 chance that your diamond would either (1) recut at almost exactly 1.50 carats, or (2) drop slightly under (1.47-1.49 carats). Either way, the value would either remain the same or increase up to 13% after recutting.

The make you currently have was regarded by EGL at the time of grading as an Ideal Make, and your diamond is inscribed with an EGL "Polaris" girdle inscription which was done for a special EGL-Diamonds International promotion.

I'm a little disappointed in the EGL-USA color grading. Usually they are no more than one grade off in color (in my opinion), but in this case they were two grades off (in my opinion, as well as the SAS-2000 spectrophotometer's opinion).

Thinking that this is intended as an upgrade, I''d favor getting the most value of this stone, and that seems to mean having the best cut, because (well, at least for now) there is a consistent premium on that. The less the super-duper-perfect are surely not looking all that much worse, but don''t get the prize... price-wise.

Paired with largish (fancy cut?) sides and a gorgeous setting, this sounds like one great way to upgrade to me.

I don''t know if this is much less expensive than getting a larger round with similar specs ( K/VS - 2 cts or a bit over methinks). Especially if there is a premium on cut for it. But selling the current ring would ''cost'' allot because everyone expects a discount from a private sale.

My 2c. It would be interesting weighing the options, if you have a plan for the new ring.

Anyway, I am curious what the current ring looks like?

Here's a funny bit...

If this diamond had perfect symmetry, the proportions do produce the 'Hearts and Arrows' pattern by the book.

And from the description of the IdealScope image in Richard Sherwood's post, and a quickie model, it sounds like there isn't a mile between the current status of this stone and the tip of the iceberg.

This is all a matter of taste and personal choice I would think... From my part, I wonder if improving optical symmetry (i.e. getting something close to the H&A pattern and improving contrast on the way) could be done without much tinkering with the proportions.

I am no expert, so please take any of this with a grain of salt.

Hello every one,
I just wrote a great post and it got lost in ciber space before it got sent
20.gif

so I feel kinda stupid. Here is the meat of the nut of what I wrote

ChooChoo,Thank you for writing to me I love your ring. I still am not sure if I wil trade/ sell or recut.

Ana, I really appreciate your posts to me. a little Quick back ground. the ring was purchased for me in Cozumel The setting is really nice 2 1/2 ct rb total side stones f/g si then 8 1/2 ct total bagettes f/g vs.

The center stone kind of over powered the smaller rounds and the bagettes do show very nicely. this setting may have been meant for a smaller stone though .It is white gold.

My Dream ring would be a super ideal hearts and arrow Fic with Suitable pears on the side.

Do you all remember seeing the Valentines special that White flash did of a Heart basket pendant?
I would Love to have that hold the center stone w/ the hearts on front and back and then have Large ish pears on the side. I wear size 4 1/2 so I love large but I only have so much area to play with so I need Alot of help .

Rich, Thank you for all of your info on the recut you are the Man! I HIGHLY suggest Richard Sherwood for All of your appraisal needs. The Appraisal came in a Beautiful packet MAGNIFICENT PRESENTATION Dude! You Rock!

ps I took my 5 stone wt gold wedding band yesterday and had it re dipped boy did that Help sparkle things up! It looks really nice today.
I am going to go ahead and post this now before I loose it again
Thanks every one, All help is appreciated!

Ana, I am CERTAINLY no expert myself so I appreciate help on All aspects of this project.

a bit more back ground this ring is not from my current fiancee. I Love him. HE proposed with his fathers gents ring which I have worn ( rezized to 4 1/2) for the past year it has a .47 D vs2
stong Blue flouresence. I Love him I would marry him even if he gave me a string. Ireally didnt want to wear a mans ring but well it meant alot to him He means the world to me.

Fiancee doesnt care about jewelery he wants me to be happy I want him to be happy and I want a beautiful ring. we would both be uncomfortable using the stone from the previous
"as is" However if it was Re configured I think all would be well in our world.

We are getting married June 25th. I am wearing a 5 stone 1 ct rb FGH vs 2a cut in white gold while we sort this other ring out. We are not kids I am 49 and he is 53 he is a frugal man and I love this about him. ( I am a spender) That said I still want the ring. I believe that with the help of you all at price scope I can have my pretty ring and it will come in on a budget that he will approve and we can get this all done before june 25.
When he sees the ring he will be pleased if I am pleased.
Help please ladies and Gentlemen.
If the stone is re cut it will cost less than buying a new stone and it will not be the "the same stone". Money "saved" from not buying a high performance center stone can be put toward pears and setting. I say to him this is the ring that I want it is x $.
the other option is sell the stone or trade and build the ring and tell him that price and let him choose how he wants to go with it. I f we do that I would want to go up a few colors though to say a G and down to a vs1 maybe vs2 but no lower.
Please help me however you can
Thank you all,
Joni

I'm not nearly as educated about diamonds as many people on this site are, but I can tell you what I would do!

I would have the stone recut and then re-set in a gorgeous new setting that make both it and your heart sing! It sounds like a nice stone that just needs that little "push" in the right direction. You will not loose a lot of carat weight and it will carry more visual weight with a new cut.

Just my opinion, good luck!

Thanks Diachi
I think I am agreeing with you. I seem to be leaning towards recut and a beautiful new setting .

If the stone ends up around 1.5 ct what size pears should I be looking for w/ a size 4 1/2 ring?

Thank you,
Joni

Thank you,

Joni

The Tiffany version uses approx. .50 carats for a 1.5 carat center.

Thank you Mrssalvo,
Judging by Ana''s diagram 1/2 ct looks like a really nice balance. this is getting more fun with you all helping me. I am getting pretty excited now
