I'd like to get my mother-in-law a book or two for Christmas, and I'm looking for recommendations. She reads a wide variety of books, but does not like anything too dark or heavy. Lately I have seen her reading the mysteries by Louise Penny. On vacations she reads book by Norah Roberts. I'd especially like to get her a paperback rather than hard cover. Does anyone have any good recommendations? Thanks so much!!

Like your mother-in-law I read a wide variety of fiction, but don't like cheesy romances. I thought this was highly entertaining: Bringing Down the House

I thought the Crazy Rich Asian's trilogy was also pretty entertaining and not too heavy, it is much better than the movie! Crazy Rich Asians Trilogy

Lastly, anything by Anita Shreve:

Deborah Crombie’s Kincaid mysteries are somewhere between Louise Penny and Nora Roberts, leaning perhaps a bit towards Louise Penny. The Maisie Dobbs mysteries lean a bit towards Nora Roberts. Each book in each series has a stand-alone story, but of course yhere’s a narrative that continues from one installment to the next as well, so it’s best to start at the beginning of the series.

@jaysonsmom and @VRBeauty thank you so much for the recommendations! I think I have decided on Bringing Down the House and the first book of the Kincaid series. I think my mother-in-law is really going to enjoy reading these books!! Thanks again!

Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz is in paperback. It’s a murder story within a murder story so two books for the price of one ;)

Thank you - I've added it to the list!
