If you were to remake your ER, who would you recommend and why? Give me your experience with vendors. Do you feel comfortable with a vendor whom you can only deal with by phone, etc.? (out of driving distance)
I am not sure mine is a "remake" as I never had an ER in first place (really short engagement amongst other reasons). However, I am having a ER and new band made to replace my current band so I have also been looking for someone I could trust.
If you are uncomfortable dealing with your remake over the phone or by email, I would search for someone local. However, in my quest for someone to make my own "forever setting" I have contacted many PS vendors (Whiteflash, Quest, BGD, Green Lake, etc). All were wonderful in commnicating with me. I am in the end going with BGD, as their designs are most similar to the "style" I am striving for, and their pricing was excellent, and they have been great communicating with me about my customizations. It is all by email as I am in Canada and has not felt limiting at all. I certainly will not be seeing them in person at any point!
I also checked out local places but they were a lot more expensive and I was not as sure whether they could get the "style" I wanted....I actually felt more comfortable going online then I did local in the end.
In your position, I think the best thing to do is look at a LOT of vendors sites and stores if you want to go local, and see who has the "style" you are looking for as that will influence your decision too, as well as what materials they work in. For example, I love Mark Morrell, but did NOT want platinum and wanted someone who worked in white gold/palladium alloy so he was out for me. Then contact them either by phone or email and see who you feel most comfortable with. I would feel comfortable with most of the PS vendors, particularly those who are very good in communicating with you, sending you CAD's, etc.
I don''t actually have an ER - nor will I ever, but I would someday LOVE to have a piece made by Leon.. his work is exquisite
and yes - I would be comfortable commissioning a piece by phone (I live in Western Canada - not going to travel anywhere near NY just for jewelry!)

I worked with Wink Jones at HighPerformanceDiamonds link for my diamond purchase and custom-designed setting. I live in the Midwest and he is located in Boise, Idaho. Everything was done by phone or e-mail and the mail. Wink has worked with customers across the U.S., in Europe, Asia and Australia.
I chose to work with him because of the good things I'd read about him on Pricescope. And he's everything people say he is -- honest, sincere, and just a whole lot of fun to work with!
The quality of his settings is very high; he works with several talented benchmen who can design anything you'd like. And, plus, his prices are very reasonable.
About 5 yrs ago I had a 2nd ER custom made with Whiteflash. I got a new stone through them and a custom setting. They were great and I''m still in love with my new ER. Last yr I bought an eternity band from whiteflash.
LOVE THAT too!!!
