My allergies are out of control. Sneezing my head off, itchy eyes and well just miserable. Anyone else suffering?? Please tell me I'm not alone. Going to the doc's tomorrow. I really had them bad in Nantucket but figured it was the dust from all the construction. Got home and am the same. I give up!!!

ETA: One year he gave me a shot, it worked like a charm. The next year I got it again, but it left a indentation on my arm. It eventually went away as I massaged the heck out of it. Do I risk that shot again?? I know PS is not the proper place to ask for medical advice. But right now am tempted to go for the shot. Maybe in a place that wouldn't show. Not talking about the regular allergy shots you get once a week, more like cortisione...
 
Awww, sorry to hear you''re suffering so, Kaleigh! I had horrible allergies as a child (I sucked my thumb and used to end up with hives all over my tongue, lol!), then I sort of "grew out of" them but when I moved 5 hours north I''ve noticed they come back here and there. My best remedy so far has been otc Claritin.

I wonder if you are experiencing leftovers from Nantucket? Is that when they started? If so, I would think hydration is key, along with whatever your dr. prescribes tomorrow...sorry I''m not much help, since I fortunately deal with them rarely I''m more of an otc gal. What about a steam bath or sauna? I do hope you feel better very, very soon!
 
Thanks Monnie. I think they have been bad all summer, but am used to suffering. But not as much as I am now. I''ve had them all my life, but now they are getting worse?? Like soooo NOT fair. I''m trying to figure out why they are getting worse. Beginning to think I am allergic to MYSELF!!! Ok that''s a JK!!!

You are right...Doctor DKS has no business practicing medicine without a license.

I would hope that you can incorporate local harvested honey in your daily diet. There are many products a bee keeper will offer. This website touches on many things you can incorporate into boosting your immune system. The main purpose is for flu. But many people obtain relief from allergies by using the same components.

I really believe everything we need to maintain our health...is right here. Sometimes it can be the simplest thing. Do your own research and see if any of these will help you. We take elderberry concentrate daily...(from Wildwood cellars)...olive leaf extract...honey as I mentioned...and most of the list on the link below.

For goodness sakes...if the shot gave you relief...try it again. Ask if the DENT can be placed somewhere less noticeable.

Kaleigh, I''m sure this is a silly question, but do you use a humidifier in your bedroom at night, and/or an air purifier? Our sewers were replaced last summer, and the dust from that construction nearly drove us crazy, specially our sinuses...we brought out the humidifier and an ion air purifier thingie and it seemed to help somewhat.

I was just checking around online and a few resources that came up when I googled "adult allergies" said that some people don''t develop allergies until later in life... who knows...hopefully you will gain more insight during your dr.''s visit tomorrow. I really feel for you, it''s no fun feeling sick when you''re not really sick, and you can''t just take some antibiotics or painkillers to feel better.

My mother has really terrible allergies to things like makeup, detergents, etc., and I hope I don''t end up inheriting those. She really has problems with eating, I suspect she has celiac sprue disease but she never listens to me and her doctors never bring that up as a possibility, as a result she''s in the hospital every few months with horrible stomach problems. If she dares to go someplace new or try different products she pays for it with a trip to the emergency room...it''s awful. The rest of my family and I used to think she was faking it due to stress or willfulness or something, but it''s happened so many times with such bad visible symptoms that it''s impossible she is being dramatic. I don''t know why I''m telling you this, it''s not relevant at all!

Hubby even yelled at me for sneezing at dinner last week. Ok next time he''s sick there will be zero sympathy as he had colds all last fall. I know, evil is as evil does.

Yup have them here, not sure about Nantucket, but the house in Nantucket is fairly new, only 6 years old. Thanks for the research, I really appreciate it. Will report back tomorrow. I thought you were supposed to grow out of this. Not get worse. And I have menapause to look forward to?? Shoot me now!!!

Ohhh, big hugs!!! I just checked out DKS'' link and wow! Lots of fun stuff to at least try, there. I do hope you get to the bottom of this and feel better soon!
 
I have nothing to add unless you want to go the route of seeing an allergist (which might not be a bad idea). I just wanted to commiserate with you. At least as I started to write, that was my goal. While I was writing, I started to feel that you shouldn't be left to suffer like this and wound up thinking maybe you should see an allergist, however. Both my mother and my husband had allergy shots for a while and then were able to cease having shots because the allergies were dealt with by those shots. That can really be life changing.

As for menopause: don't assume it will be bad. I had no symptoms whatsoever. I had crazy symptoms in my 30's, but continued to menstruate regularly until I was 50 when everything just stopped calmly :-). Not everyone suffers.

Lisa I am so sorry you are having to put up with this, wish I had some advice to offer but I wanted to send you a big hug!
 
Hubby delevoped allergies as an adult and is now taking regular allergy shots. It has improved his life somewhat but is still suffering alot of symptoms. My son, on the other hand, because he started shots VERY early, is hardly experiencing anything. So the earlier you do the shots (if you choose to go this route), the quicker the relief from the sneezing, watering eyes, itchy throat, etc. I''ve never heard of the cortizone shots. Do you know specifically what you are allergic to? Knowing this will help you avoid the triggers.

I am so so sorry. Allergies are no fun; I had them since I was 10. If cortisone works once a year for you then I would get it.
My neighbor is an allergist and he told me if you get too many of them they are bad for you since they are a steroid.

I get allergy shots and take allegra and it helps me. I stopped shots from the age of 14 to 24; I ended up with mucus draining into my eyes and I thought I had pink eye. It turned out to be allergies so I stayed w/the shots again. I am not 100% better, but a lot better then I was before.

I feel for you so if they are really bad you should try shots or at least get a scratch test so they can find out how allergic you are to weeds, trees, mold, etc and put you the best regimen. They may just put you on a prescription and nose spray.

Lisa, I''m in the same boat and this year is the worst it''s ever been. My allergies started early and hit me like a ton of bricks. I also had a mystery chest pain for several weeks this spring that I had all sorts of test for (stress test, radioactive dye MRI, more EKGs that I can count), and the "best guess" diagnosis that came out of all that was that it was probably allergy related and that my lungs were irritated. (Here I am thinking I''m having a frickin'' heart attack and it''s all about the ragweed.

) Lots of people in my office are suffering this year too, including people who have never had allergy symptoms before.

For relief I take Kirkland Allergy Sinus medicine. I don''t know what the real "brand" is (Kirkland is Costco''s store brand name) but it works better than anything else. Relieves my symptoms, doesn''t make me drowsy, and doesn''t dry me out TOO MUCH. (I had an experience with Claritin one time that I still remember the discomfort from!)

Hope you get some relief!

I''ve had them all my life but they''ve been worse in recent years, and there never seems to be any real cause. If I am cleaning or organizing and stirring up lots of dust, they''re EXTRA awful... and nothing helps other than Benadryl, which totally knocks me out to the point of being almost incoherent.

The only preventative thing that has consistently worked for me has been Rhinocort nasal spray (WHEN I remember to take it), so that might be worth trying if you haven''t already. No side effects, which is nice... whereas Claritin gives me some weird ones. But the doctor should have recommendations... good luck tomorrow!!
 
Thanks guys!! I just got back from my allergist. I had run out of my Flonase spray and he thinks that''s why I am so bad right now. We decided not to do the shot, but instead he put me on a 6 day course of Prednisone. Plus I am taking Zyrtec. So I should be feeling better soon.

Dee, thanks for letting me know I''m not alone. I well remember you chest pain, you had me scared. And it was ragweed?? Oh my!!

I think something is wierd this year outside.
I usualy dont have a lot of trouble with my asthma this time of year but its been nutz the last 3-4 weeks or so.
 
I''m sorry you''ve been having trouble. Does your air conditioner have a HEPA filter? If not, it might help to get one. I''ve been having difficulty breathing this summer, too, and I get an allergy shot every week. I think the intense heat and humidity are making everybody''s allergies act up.

if I am remembering right...that Prednisone knocks you immune system down to nothing. (while you are on it...) You are extremely vunerable to colds germs etc. Wash you hands constantly. If you don''t use antibactrial soaps...do so only for this week. A short period, not sustained. For goodness sakes don''t suck

Yes, you are right. It can also mess with your bladder. I try to avoid prednisone as much as possible. Some people are really sensitive to it to begin with (like me), and sometimes (like DH), you can develop a nasty sensitivity which is pretty much worse than whatever allergy/illness is being treated.

Oh crap, thanks for the heads up DKS, I can always count on you for great info!! I am home and away from my nephew, so no germs from preschoolers. I am a firm believer in washing one''s hands, so no worries there. Went out with my BFF who is a nurse for a nice dinner out. The owner asked if we wanted to sit outside, I said normally I would love to, but my allergies are a mess. She said her''s were the worst ever. So that made me feel better. BFF said she was glad I did the prednisone as she knows I was really waving the red flag!! She''s known me since I was little and knows I don''t complain very often, so when I do it has to be bad.

Oh lyra, is that why I was going to the bathroom all day long?? OY!!! My older dog follows me everywhere and yes even the bathroom. I think even he knew, wow you have gone way too much today. I swear this dog picks up on everything. LOL!!!

Thanks sweetie!!! I just saw your fall pics of Nova Scotia. They were so beautiful. That is one place I would love to visit. Had family friends that stayed their during the summers, and they always said how beautiful it was there!!

I tried Claritin and that helped somewhat but didn''t make them all go away. When I got my insurance they put me on antibiotics which I developed an allergy for... anaphylactic shock... not fun. I went back and the doctor said my body was kinda like in this constant state of allergic reaction... he put me on steroids for a week to shock my body out of that mode... the very first pill I could actually feel relief! After close to a year of misery, one week of steroids fixed it! It''s something you might want to ask your doc about in case your situation is the same... it''s not fun being on them- insomnia, irritability, weight gain- but just for a week totally worth it!

Oh you poor thing!! Glad you got relief. I am feeling the relief now, finally. I do know a lot about Steroids, my son had severe asthma growing up. They saved his life a few times, and thank god for them. But the side effects are not fun. But hey, if they do the trick, they do the trick!! Thanks for responding sera!!!

Just wanted to sympathise - FI is allergic to everything and has a terrible time with hayfever. It makes you feel so awful.

They have pretty much banned the shots here in the UK. Apparently they can have some very dangerous side effects. My brother used to get them and they worked really well - but no doctor will do them anymore.
