Here we go -

I am starting the process in terms of finding THE DIAMOND for my girl. She has, not-so-subtly, explained that she wants something in the 1.7 - 2 ct range. My girl is a looney-toon when it comes to this stuff, but because I love her, I want to get her something beautiful. HOWEVER, people, money is not growing in my backyard, so I am going to have to start doing some research in order to find something she will love but that won''t bankrupt me.

FYI: I know NOTHING about diamonds--NOTHING. I am doing some reading and it isn''t all making sense so I am hoping a few of you can lend me your brains and teach me some diamondy knowledge.

Here is what I am looking for:

1.7 to 2cts
GIA - AGS certified??? I keep hearing, "IT HAS TO BE CERTIFIED BABY!!!"
VSI-SI1
Color - ? can''t quite recall but something like F or G-I

What I am working with in terms of LOOT: $12k-$16k ($16k is THE MAX I can spend for a stone).

I will gladly accept any and all help I can get. !!! PLEASE HELP !!!

Many thanks, in advance.

- Peace -

Unfortunately it is going to be really hard to get all that within your budget. But I''ll try. Be right back!

ETA: Wants a round. Oops! See below!

Sorry guys, I forgot to mention she wants a round diamond.

Beat ya/NOT/sorta.

Actually, you've got options without having to break a sweat...

4 options on the search by cut database right here...from $12 - $16.

This is at $15,785 (based on Pricescope advantaged/wire pricing) is an ACA...rather prized here.

Regards,

Lol, I read "process" as "princess" sorry!. RG gave you some great options then.

Ziggles - do you know what shape she prefers?

Thanks neatfreak. I guess I should have added the shape she wants! Apologies. But I hear you, looks like it might be tough finding a close to 2 ct w/ my budget.

I just found one at GOG but you need to go to J SI2. See post above.

What would J mean? Is it more yellow? Looks nice to me but its my head so...must be just right.

Kidding. Thanks neatfreak! I will look into that one more.

I dont know anything about rounds but I would add that www.whiteflash.com and www.goodoldgold.com have the most information readily available on their site to asses the diamond, i.e. ASET and ideal scope images (if you don''t know what those are, you can certainly read about them on pricescopes....there is GOBS of information about them)....

The whiteflash ACA (a cut above) rounds are highly praised (and coveted) here...I believe they are cut in house at Whiteflash. You can read about a PS''s recent visit to Whiteflash here.

You can also call Whiteflash or Jon at Good Old Gold and either would walk you through what you''re looking for, explain things, etc. Both have excellent reputations.

Then, once you narrow it down to a few stones, post them here and all the round experts will let you know if you got a winner!
Good luck!

To most people, an ideal cut J will be stunningly gorgeous and won''t be noticeably yellow. From the side, in certain lights, it will have a more creamy look to it, but if size is important to her, then she''ll most likely appreciate the size upgrade to the 2 carat for a drop in color!!! There are many many beautiful ideally cut J stones on here that are just gorgeous. But only you can know if she''s color sensitive.

Cant wait to see it!!!

Ditto. I would join the crowd who have grabbed a J in a heartbeat to get extra size, but it depends on whether she is colour sensitive as Neat says. But a great cut will really make the most of a J and there are no worries about it looking yellow - you may in some lights notice a slight teeny tinge of warmth from the side, but this is still no issue for many!

I absolutely adore J, SI1 and SI2 options. Terrific bargains they are.
If I had your budget, I would definitely consider this stone:
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3154/

I would ask Jon at GOG, if this particular SI2 eye clean? And if this is a high, med, low J.

It also has strong flourescence, so I''d ask if this affects the stone in any way, and usually it makes Js look whiter.

Love love love everything about it.

If that inclusion at the bottom right of the stone isn't noticeable, that is a gorgeous stone!

Ziggles,

You do seem to be getting a lot of help.

Do I understand correctly that your special friend has given you some particular suggestions...such that you''ve captured them above?

If so...personally...I would not be motivated to try to convince her otherwise. You can get her what she has asked for. I''d just do that.

Pricescope can help you in lots of different ways...and you can spend years getting educated about lots of nuances. In this case...somehow...it just seems too easy to meet your original requirements.

Just my 2 cents.

Staying with your requirements...you have several options still. Don''t forget to use the search by cut database to see for yourself.

Warm regards,

Lots of helpful info--so thanks are in order to you all.

I don't really know if she is "color sensitive." Most of the time, honestly, I don't pay all that much attention. Horrible, I know. So as of recently I have been trying to mentally take down notes when she says something. Since the engagement has been coming up a lot more, she has been making suggestions. As long as the stone is eye-clean (stealing your word for it) she would probably be happy--although I am not sure.

I think she may prefer size over color but I might have to ask her before I do anything. I should right? I am asking the ladies in here by the way. I trust your expertise in this case.

To the men, thanks men. I will heed your advice as well.

In the meantime, I will keep looking. I like the stone from GOG (thanks!) but its hard to tell from these pics, or is it just me? That's one thing making me weary of an online purchase.

I am fairly certain, but won't swear, that a poster enquired about this stone awhile ago, and it was eyeclean. (she wasn't ready to buy, that's why she didn't get it) I'm almost positive this is the one, because I remember those inclusions, and the strong flo. And that flo will help it face up a bit whiter. Nice stone.

I understand the hesitancy to purchase online, I've been there. GOG was my first, sizable online purchase, and they could not have been nicer. They're a very reputable, easy company to work with. Do a search on here for reviews of them, if would help ease your fears.

I'm not a size gal, and I'm also in the minority around here.

I've seen many a woman disregard color to get the size they want, and there's nothing wrong with that. Also, these super ideal cut stones will not look like the typical "mall" J stone. The better the cut, the less tint you see.

You absolutely must find out her preference for color and clarity, because it sounds like she does have preferences. If I told my hubby no lower than H or I VS2, you''d better believe I would not be happy with lower. So please do find out. The I VS1 stone looks very safe to me. The others are beautiful, but you have to know if J and SI would be within the parameters she can accept. Both WF and GOG carry excellent quality diamonds and I have bought from both. But like Ellen, I don''t put size above all the other criteria.

I would be hesitant to buy just any stone online, but with all the information that Good Old Gold gives you, plus their reputation here, I wouldn''t hesitate with them personally. You won''t find a nicer stone for the price if you want to hit 2 carats. And if you don''t care about hitting 2 carats the other options given to you are also fantastic and would be wonderful choices.
