I have a 1.75 carat diamond ring (round) that has a setting with two trillions on the side. I was wondering if I can upgrade to a 2+ carat center stone without getting a new setting?
It all depends on the dimensions of your current diamond and the new one. The jeweller might be able to tweak the setting a bit to fit the new stone. I know that 0.5mm is not a problem. 1 mm? Depends on the setting (this becomes more restrictive with existing sidestones, so probably will not work).
I was in a very similar situation. I had a 1.4 carat princess that had .33 trillions on each side. I upgraded last year to a 2.02 carat oval and kept the same setting. All they had to do was change out the head. It looked nice and I was so excited by my upgraded center stone that I probably would have been happy with any setting.
Of course now, not even a year later, I am trading in my trillions and custom designing a new setting, which will be a halo around the oval with a split micropave shank. I think finally (at least I hope) I will have my dream ring
So, I think you should be fine, but of course as everyone already mentioned, your jeweler would probably know best.
