Hi, my Mum has a round diamond approx 1.45 carats that she got about 20 years ago. We dont really know the exact color or clarity, but for arguments sake it has always been refered to as white (D-F) and VS quality. She`s not looking to resell so we would only wish to know these qualities for the sake of knowledge. She got it from her trusted brother who is in the industry. But being Australia, and 20 years ago, I`m guessing that cut was not much talked about to say the least.

Fast forward to today and she was told by another person in the industry that it is a slight fish eye and of course here we all know what that means!

Well, I am going to NY in July for about a week. Is there any one inparticular that I could trust with my Mum`s diamond to recut it? And any clues on how much these things cost, how long they take etc?

I would like to see it really sparkling and firey but it just looks ok.

Thanks in advance, Chloe

I'm not sure you can get something recut in person during that one week period, but perhaps you can ship it to the US and pick it up during that time. Another member just had her diamond recut by Brian Gavin Diamonds and lost minimal weight. They're in Texas, but can probably send it to a Fedex holding facility during your trip to NY.

Thanks for your reply, it seems like Brian is the one to use then? I should contact him and ask about it! Just wondered if there was anyone in NY to choose from? I`m not sure about customs and insurance etc. Definately some things to look into.

I just remembered that GOG did a recut on a 5 ct stone recently - contact them too! They're about an hour out of NY. Plus, a trip to their store would be a like a trip to Disneyland for the kids! ;) hehe

I'd also get it graded by GIA in New York or California or AGS in Las Vegas.

That is the best way to be certain of what color and clarity grades (and now cut) you have.

Thanks for the GOG suggestion. Correct about it being a destination in itself!
And great suggestion about the GIA certificate. Will definately look into both.

I do appreciate the advice !

Hi guys,( Kenny and Webdiva) :wavey:

The diamond has been sent to BG and he will have it ready to fedex to me while I am in NY.

Thanks for your advice.

Lesley helped me from A to Z and basically held my hand with lots of patience as I had NO idea on how to fedex or how international postage even worked. I didn`t realise it was so easy once you knew what forms to fill out etc. But while I was learning it was like listening to chinese! I would not have been able to send it if Lesley didn`t show me how plus offer to pay and insure it all from her end. In the end I just had to get the correct packaging from Fedex in Melbourne and fill out multiple forms and Lesley did the rest from her end.

I do have the diamond images and must say that it is definitely not hearts and arrows!!!! Huge understatement!! It actually looks like the facets were in the middle of playing paint ball with each other.

My Mum is very excited with how this might turn out. I spoke with Brian Gavin himself and he is very optimistic about this makeover!

One question, if the diamond is left for longer in order to get a proper GIA certificate, would we have to pay GST on this diamond coming back to Australia by post? I might start a new post for this question also.

Thanks so much everyone for your help.
