Why do some rings look mis-shapen when resized?

A normal ring should look perfectly regular and shaped attractively after sizing. Excerptions to this rule occur if the ring needs to be made extraordinarily small or large, if the sides of the ring contain stones that are prong to loosen or fall out if the shape is altered, or if the jeweler is not as good a craftsman as is possible. Any or all of these three reasons may apply. You'd have to be far more specific about the particular ring to get better advice.

Thank you Oldminer. It is not about a specific ring but rather a few rings I have which have looked bent after resizing. I think it is because of the small size though as I am a 4 and a half and there are no side stones in the rings.

I don't know anything about your ring. In order to enjoy our hellbent for cheap culture many modern rings have metal thicknesses of as much as 0.2 millimeter. On such a ring there is no way to sized it without the metal collapsing.
Often flimsy rings are left oval to aviod breaking pressure on the gems.
As dave stated ... A normal ring can be sized up or down 2 sizes + or - without ill effect by a qualified benchman.

Does that help?
