Hi everyone,
Just want to drop a quick note to let you know that this site is awesome.
Also, my FI & I would like to put a rave (based on personal experience) - For those who are living in Boston area and looking for custom design rings / e-rings.
We highly recommend Long’s in Burlington. Ask to met with Danny Mc Eachern (he is a custom designer for Long’s).
He is very nice and a great guy to work with. (For the sales person, we worked with Joe Kurker)
We custom made a 3-stone-ring (with blue sapphires on the sides). Got the sapphires from Richard Homer.
Got the appraisal from Jeff Averbook (also recommend him)
Will post a pic of the ring soon.
Let me know if you have specific question

That is great!!!. I have purchased from Long''s several times in the past. I would like to buy an engagement ring from Long''s. They have their own custom 3 stone rings on display in platinum and the prices seem resonable. But they do not have a cert. Are they safe to buy, would anyone ever buy a diamond without a cert? I am better off picking a designer setting and selecting certified diamonds?

Thank you.

I would bet on certified diamonds (GIA; EGL-USA... HRD if it so happens) especially if this is a large purchase for you. It is not that uncertified ones are cheaper - only the grading gets more and more lax the further away you get from lab reports

I do not know the particular jewelry store, but this seems to be a reasonable concern, on average. Now, there is nothing wrong with going for those ''lower'' grades as long as you know what you are getting. Certs help comparing prices and not much else, after all.

Uncertified is ok if you have enough confidence and/or the patience to go via an independent appraiser for a reality check.

For this, it is allot less reliable to grade diamonds once set, so buying them loose presents some advantage. But requires more commitment and patience... again

Anyway, I would consider any shop''s settings (branded or not, ''designer'' or not) and especially custom made by shops. Allot of the appeal comes from the match between setting and stone. Ready-made ones may fit or may just be ''constrained'' to fit - something not always feasible without loosing some appeal, IMO.

Just some thoughts. Would you consider shopping online ?

Thank you for your reply. I have nothing against shopping online, but I like to see exactly what I am buying especially a purchase with so many variables. I am new to this, and have been looking for a while, but the time has come and I need to make forward progress. Where do you suggest to look online? We also just booked at last minute trip to Bermuda, for next week. I doubt I will find what I am looking for by then, but it would be nice.

Thank you.

I understand what you''re saying about the cert. That said, Long''s is one of the few jewelry stores where I would actually consider buying something like this without one. I absolutely love the quality of their merchandise. I don''t know their return policy. If it''s a reasonable policy, maybe you could buy it and then have it appraised. ??? Then maybe return it if the appraisal didn''t come out to your liking. Just a thought.
