So I've been doing engagement ring research for a few days now and have an idea of what quality I'm looking for.
I'd like to get a 1.5 carat round brilliant, I, SI2, very good or better cut.
Using the assumption that GIA is "correct" I could buy a diamond that fits my criteria on Bluenile for around $8,500.00
I understand that EGL ratings are loose and often are 2 to 3 total grades worse than equivalent GIA ratings but even using this "discounting" my possibly naive eyes see significant value to possible "arbitrage" the rating agencies.
For instance, I could buy a:
1. 1.55 carat, F, VS2, Premium cut with no fluorescence (EGL) for $7,800. This is 6 total notches better for a cheaper price (3 notches better color, 2 notches better clarity, 1 notch better cut).
Do you think there is value here, or in EGL vs. GIA in general?
What do you all think about buying an EGL and having it sent to GIA for testing? If it comes back bad I could just return the diamond and I'd only be out ~$100.
Am I just naive?
