I'm considering this diamond because it's very large for the price (1.75ct for £3800, or $6500, including tax at 20%). It's graded as an L, but I don't mind warmer diamonds and perhaps the strong fluorescence would compensate a little?

There are a couple of clouds and feathers in the middle of the table, but it's VS2 so I'm assuming these won't be visible. However there's also a cavity and indented natural on the girdle, which is graded as V Thin to V Thick. I'm not sure whether I should reject the diamond for this reason?

HI OP, It's a very deep stone, almost 70% deep, I've never seen one so deep and cant imagine it'll be a good performer for you. So that should be reason you reject this stone. It also faces up more like a 1.3 ct. stone. Why not look around that size in an excellent cut in the j/k color range. You would be much better off. As for girdles, just avoid extremely thin ones, might be fragile for chipping.

Thanks for the advice. What depth etc should I be looking for?

Basically I'd like the largest diamond possible, and I'm happy to have a lower colour (all the way down to Z) if it means the stone can be bigger. Clarity isn't important as long as it's eye clean. Obviously it also needs to be well cut and sparkly with no serious flaws such as an extremely thin girdle. I know a halo setting would make the ring look bigger, but it also costs more and requires more maintenance and care (I'm worried about stones popping out), which means I can't afford such a big diamond.

I've been looking on bluenile.com and 77diamonds.com for a stone which costs roughly UK£3000 (US$5200) before tax. The advantage of 77Diamonds is that they're in the UK and I could order a stone for inspection and send it back - I couldn't do this with other vendors due to hassles with import tax. If I buy from the US I'd basically have to trust the vendor to choose a good stone, I wouldn't be able to see it until the finished ring arrived.

I think especially with stones that aren't round, the experts will want some images so they can give an educated opinion

The vendors I've been looking at (Bluenile and 77Diamonds) don't offer images of the diamonds they sell. Is there another vendor I should be looking at?

The vendors that are commonly recommended around PS are ones such as James Allen, Good Old Gold, Brian Gavin, Whiteflash and High Performance Diamonds to name a few. All provide real images and other information.

We are Canadian and ended up buying a diamond online, not quite the same as UK, but I get the stress of buying sight unseen and from far away. What eased my stress was going with one of the vendors that has been thoroughly vetted by the experts here at PS. I could read tonnes and tonnes of testimonials about superior service and trustworthiness, so I was very confident in who we were dealing with (so far GOG for an AVR, and HPD for a teeny, tiny .26 pointer that I have big plans for someday :Up_to_something: ).

From what I've read buying a round without being able to see it IRL is often much easier than with the other cuts, which it seems are more subjective. And I think that rounds usually face up larger than cushions.

Since you like the warmer colours and want the biggest bang for your buck, would you consider an antique diamond? Vendors like Love Affair Diamonds and Jewels by Grace are often recommended on PS, but again, old cuts seem to be a very subjective thing (can't buy by the numbers) and you would need to trust in the vendor's assessment along with the pics and videos.

Cushions tend to run deep. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11241/ that's 73% and Brellia's are as sparkly as a cushion gets. Also note the dimensions on the report attached for a square 1.57 ct cushion (6.56 x 6.56 x 4.71mm) [also 71.8%]. They face up smaller than rounds. You can't judge a cushion on the proportions of a round. What you need is an actual image/video of the stone and ideally an ASET

20 bucks says someone opened the cert thinking it was a round ;)
