Typically the output report from a Sarin analysis states average values. For example, a crown percentage may be stated as 33.8 degrees(or AGS0), but the 8 cut angles may range from say 33.4 to 34.3, with some being AGS0 and some not. Why then does the stone still receive an overall rating of AGS0, when in fact it should not because not all of the cut angles are AGS0?

Some folks are claiming that the Sarin analysis cannot report the range values from the analysis, only the average. This seems confusing since the machine already has the individual values in order to compute the average. Why can't it give these ranges too?

Well, I'm afraid you should address this question to AGS :)) Keep also in mind that AGS cut grading system is not perfect.

Latest Sarin machines (software actually) can report you every facet of the diamond (with certain accuracy of course). Next version of DiamCalc will allow you to import these Sarin measurements and analyze the performance of the real diamond in terms of light return/leakage, fire, scintillation, etc.

I have another question: is it really important and can you see a difference?

If you are a perfectionist type of person, you might also want to check symmetry to be ideal. Then you might want to check the stone with Hearts and Arrows scope or Ideal-Scope.

The whole issue is that Sarin and Megascope technology is way better than doing the same measurements manually. Neither is perfect. The AGS cut grading system is not perfect, either. The machines and the cut grading system are the present "state of the art" and are going to be modified and improved over time.

People are demanding more and better knowledge and accuracy. The race is on to give it to them, but it is not here yet. There are ways to get nearly all the data that some people really want, but in the end, most of the data is waste as there are so many permutations of shapes and angles that the expert eye is still an excellent judge of how good the diamond is cut. The Ideal-Scope will tell you a lot more than devices costing many thousands more. AND, it is a whole lot simpler.

Thanks for your insights. I guess as the technology becomes more advanced, then so will the consumer.

Cheers,
