I''m looking at a diamond and was wondering what you guys thought of it...

Shape:Radiant
Size:2.02
Color: D
Clarity: SI1
Dimensions: 7.69x6.87x4.36
Dep: 63.5
Table: 53
Girdle: Thick to ExtraThick
Polish: VG
Symmetry: Good
Price:$13,300

Even though its an SI1 the inclusions are on the edge and hardly noticeable. It was rated in Europe (not sure the certification) as a VS2 but GIA rates it as an SI1. So im ok with the clarity and the color is beautiful but was concerned with the cut. Do the dimensions look ok? comparing a diamond that size with those specs online with various others it seems like a a solid buy. with the naked eye the diamond looks great. any insight would be helpful. thanks.

Hi Radiantguy,

Does it have a GIA or EGL or other report? I am not quite sure?

I don't see any major flags with the dimensions but at best all we have is a chalk outline of the stone with the depth and table, have you compared it with many others to know if this particular radiant really appeals to you? These shapes are tricky and much comes down to personal taste.

What I would suggest as this is a sizeable purchase, get it in writing that you can take the diamond to an independant appraiser during a return period and that you can return the diamond should it not check out to your satisfaction in any way with an independant appraisal. Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

If you can find an appraiser who is skilled in evaluating cut then so much the better.

thanks for the advice. I have looked at a few others but the colors were in the G and H range and i could definitely see a difference. Also, there is supposedly both a GIA certificate and the European one i mentioned (i just forget the name ) I have not received a copy of them yet. If i get the certificates do i still need to see an appraiser? your comment about the no "major flags" is really helpful.

You are welcome! I would want an appraiser to check that the extra thick part of the girdle isn't taking up a huge portion of it, sometimes the very thick parts are placed on the corners which is fine. Also it would be good to know the crown height of the diamond ( look for greater than 10%) as this helps the production of fire. An appraiser who has a Sarin machine would be able to scan the diamond to get this info. Personally I think an appraisal is a good move with a purchase of this magnitude but it comes down to your comfort level.

Radiants do show more colour than other shapes, this is the reason why you see so many fancy colour diamonds cut into radiant shapes, so good that you have seen some others and colour grades to know that a D is for you! Also was the other lab report HRD? They are better known in Europe and have a good rep.
