Quiz ...

So I was talking to another PSer a while back and I said something about the spread of a diamond and she was like... and your point is? I just assumed that every Pser knows what the face up sizes of the different shapes are at 1 carat or so. Turns out I was wrong so...

Here's a quiz: (we'll do the answers on Friday).

What is the approximate face up of the following shapes at 1 carat (ranges for fancy's):

1. Well cut one carat round brilliant?

2. Well cut one carat square princess?

3. Well cut one carat square cushion?

4. Well cut one carat rectangular cushion?

5. Well cut one carat rectangular emerald cut?

6. Well cut one carat square emerald cut?

Ha! I surely can't answer those without looking them up! I know they are all less than the round, which should be about 6.5mm. I know different weight round diameters pretty well because that is mainly what I look at. I have been looking at the AVC's lately and the square ones cts. run close to 6mm.

Interesting. I know that a rb should be around 6.5mm, but beyond knowing that others face up a bit smaller, I'm at a loss.

I only know that a RB looks bigger than a princess due to cut size and that people complain about the face up of asschers. I love me an asscher or octavia though!!! Oh and Pears and Marquise look bigger since they are elongated.

I think surface area is a more accurate consideration corresponding to the visual impression of diamond size. The corners of a square stone add surface area but not spread. Still trying to figure out how to calculate surface area for a pear....

I thought pears and marquise cuts look bigger because they are shallower than other cuts?

It's been a while since I've taken math, but wouldn't it be the area of a triangle plus the area of a semi-circle?

You forgot to list MQ cuts for your quiz. I don't remember the width, but the length should be about 10 mm. That's one thing to love about MQ cuts, even though they aren't popular anymore.

Shimmer got all the answers. Shimmer, if you spent more time on RT you would be a great help!

I would only add that both the rectangular cushion and the square emerald cut dimensions are 'minimums' you can get bigger, but you shouldn't get smaller.

With the other dimensions you can get slightly less and it would still be well cut.

2. About 5.8 mm x 5.8 mm
3. A smidge less than 6x6mm
4. & 5. are tough for me since I am not sure what an ideal aspect ratio would be.

Shimmer, did you really have all those memorized? I am impressed if you did! I don't have them memorized because I usually only help with round threads, or with cushions, I ask to see the pictures!

DS I have them memorized and that's how I knew her answers were right and I never checked a source. Spread is always interesting to me, so I memorized it.
