First let me say the 2 weeks I''ve spent lurking on the PS forums have been really educational. This is a first-rate community that you''ve all built here, and you should be proud of how great it is!

Like many others, I''m shopping for an Asscher diamond for an e-ring. When I started I had no idea how challenging it would be in terms of understanding the different aspects that contribute to performance as well as finding that perfect stone. The jewelers I''ve talked to locally do not have Asscher cuts, so I''ve been spending a lot of time looking at online inventories. The guidance you all have given other shoppers has definitely been helpful as I narrow things down.

My question is about L/W ratio. I''m considering a stone that''s 6.80x6.60 (for a L/W of 1.03), EX/VG. I know that ideally it should be more square, but as I look at a mm ruler, I don''t think I could tell that this stone wasn''t perfectly square, especially once it''s set. You experts who have looked at tons of square stones, what do you think?

It''s probably fine, most asschers, especially the original ones were not exactly square. The only thing to consider is whether you wish to set it e/w or n/s.

.20mm on a near 7mm stone is fine for most people if the patterns are concentric.
5% or so might be able to tell up close.
I am one of them.
At 1/2 arm length distance, no way.

You may want to try drawing it out in actual size, and cutting it out.

For me, I can most often tell the Asschers that are more off-square than others, but I'm one that heavily leans to as close to a dead on 1:1 ratio as possible. A couple of 10ths of a mm doesn't sound like much, and it generally isn't on a 7 mm stone.

I have seen quite a few slightly off square Asschers on PS that are just amazingly gorgeous, so really, if you haven't seen pics, get them, and then show us, please.

Ditto to LtP. I like Asschers because of the squareness and the symmetry, so the 1:1 is a big sell for me, personally. That doesn''t mean, though, that they can''t be brilliant and beautiful if they are not. I think it just depends on what draws you to that shape and what you notice when you look at them. Good luck! (and don''t forget the pics!)

Thanks for the quick responses!

I''m working on getting pics, full dimensions and an ASET images so I can see what you all think between the two I''m looking at. Hopefully I''ll have them in the next day or so.

I think you will notice it, but you will have to look closely. I have the same ratio (6.54 x 6.40) and while I was looking for a 1:1 stone, I fell in love with this one. When the jeweler told me the measurements I was surprised because I saw a perfect square, but when I started looking closer I could pick up on it. I even decided to set it E/W, though it''s certainly not something you''d be able to see unless somebody pointed it out.

So will you notice it? Probably. Will you care? I doubt it, if the stone is great.

The pictures and images will defintely tell the story. It could be fine, or not, or there could be other aspects of the cut that make it a poor choice, etc.
