A friend of mine got a long-haired cat. He is an adult - her daughter rescued him from a shelter. Very hairy. My friend says that the first time she brushed him, she developed a sensation of hairs on her upper palate, and she constantly wants to take them out. There are no hairs - and never were, but the sensation persists. I think it may be dander, but has anyone else experienced this?

I don''t know what it is but a good solution would seem to be wearing a mask while grooming her feline friend.

Well, first, its important to know that long-haired cats don''t necessary shed more or produce more allergens than shorter haired cats.

That said, what your friend is experiencing may very well be allergies to her kitty. If they are troublesome, she should talk to her doctor about trying some over the counter medications for allergies - there are a number of excellent options available - my husband and I are both allergic (I have asthma as well) and we both take OTC meds and co-exist quite happily with our three kitties

Oh, and good for your friend for adopting a kitty from the shelter
