i am planning to order a diamond off one of pricescope''s internet vendors, but i have a few questions regarding getting an appraisal:

1. even if the vendor sends the diamond with a "letter of verification from an independant graduate gemnologist appraiser," do i still need to get another appraisal?

2. do i get the stone appraised and then have it set locally, or have the stone appraised in its setting?

3. the vendor offers a 10-day trial period in which i can test, observe, compare, etc the diamond and can receive full money back in that period. is this the time i should get the stone appraised? especially, what if i am plenty happy with the diamond and don''t really care what it appraises for, can i put off the appraisal or do you recommend doing it in this trial period?

4. about how much should i expect to pay for this independant appraisal?

thanks so much for your help

what are you getting the appraisal for?

i dont even really know. see question #2. depending on the advice i receive, i might be getting a RB diamond appraised, or i might be getting a RB diamond in a custom setting appraised

i was only asking because i personally don''t think appraisals are always necessary (i still love all of you ps appraisers!!) and was wondering what you personally felt you would be getting, or needing, from an appraisal.
the information put forth on the popular vendor websites, along with highly regarded grading reports leave little room for needing a formal appraisal.
