Okay here is the situation my boss recently decided not to get engaged to his GF so he never gave her the great ring he bought her. Instead I purchased it from him for a real good price. It is a princess stone 1.78ct D color and VVS2 clarity, anyway he had it mounted in 14k white gold in a kinda of an x prong looking setting. Now my gf loves vatche settings and I love the comfort X prong setting and I would like it to be set in plat. My question is I have only heard great things about vatche from this great forum. The only thing I worry about is that they will chip or damage the diamond when they remove it and reset it. Does anyone think I have anything to worry about? Also do you think vatche would let me order the setting and then when it''s ready let me drop off the diamond myself since I am from NY and then let me wait until it''s set. I am just so parnoid!!!!! Thanks guys for any info you may have. THis is a great forum!!!!!!!

Sorry I can''t supply any answers...but I was wondering this myself; is it more risky to have a princess cut reset than say a round? If, so how much more risky?

From what I have read on these boards a princess stone is more likey then a round diamond to get damaged during a reset or even from regualar wear and tear. But what I was thinking was since it''s 14kt white gold it would need to be rediped in like 5 years say and then they would have the remove the stone anyway to redip . So either way the stone has to come out and at least with plat it will most likey stay set forever. I think I am worrying way to much!!!!

To replate a white gold ring with rhodium does NOT require the stone to be removed from the setting.

And yes, princess corners are more likely to be damaged during setting, in addition to regular old wear and tear, especially if the corners have a very thin girdle.

I don''t know of any jeweler that will just let you stand there and watch them set your stone. I''m a pharamcist and it drives me crazy when someone stands in front of me and watches me fill their prescription. I couldn''t even imagine someone staring a hole in me while I''m setting a diamond!

If you''re ordering the setting from Dvatche, I think the safest thing you can do is have them set the stone as opposed to having another jeweler set it.

Actually, some jewelry stores around me have several bench people available all day long. So when my mother picked out a new e-ring and diamond, they were escorted over to the bench person who sized the ring and set the diamond right in front of them. Although, in reality, I would rather NOT see how they work on my ring because it looks so horrible!! Grinding, and banging, and hammering.....

You would never believe what happens! LOL

Hi! I hope I can shed some light on this!
Recently changed my setting from white gold tiff style to platinum vatche x prong. For the 5 years that I had white gold, I liked it pretty well! I don''t know what is meant by re-dipped, but it can be rhodium plated very easily while you wait for about $20, and they should not remove the stone. It was really no problem. I had it done every 6 months when I had the prongs checked. Some people, i.e. my mom can go years with no yellowing. Depends a lot on your own body chemistry. Some people actually like the look of wg without the plating. Visually, I cannot tell the difference betwwn the wg and plat.
When I bought my vatche in platinum, the jeweler (an authorized vatche reseller) did the work while I waited. Yes, this voided the warranty, however they told me they have NEVER had a person have a problem with the setting that required warranty claims, and if there was one, they would fix it free. I didnt get it in writing, this might have been stupid, but I did not want to send my diamond away and have it gone 3 weeks when it could be set in less than an hour. I don''t regret the decision. Later I had to have it sized, and that would have been another 3 weeks without my ring as opposed to 30 min in the store.
The weird thing is, I didn''t realize how easily plat scratches! It can be repolished and doesn''t lose metal, an advantage over wg. It is a lot heavier. Over many many years, it should hold up better. I don''t regret the decision to get it and I love my setting. However, if you already have the ring set in WG and it is an X prong type setting, you might consider leaving it in the current setting rather than spending $1100 to buy something that will look essentially the same. Just my .02! The diamond sounds beautiful!!!! Sucks for your boss, but awesome for you and your gf! Congrats!

I don't want to stand in front him I think that would be rather rude. What I was thinking was I wanted to drop it off and maybe return about a few hours later. But I am more curious on how princess stones have turned out after resetting them. Gailrmv can you tell me if your stone was a princess stone? Thanks

Just beware that whenever ANY stone is set, there is a risk of it being chipped. This risk is of course higher with stones with points, such as princesses, pears, marquises, etc. Ask the jeweler setting the stone what would happen if the stone is indeed chipped while being set. Will he or she cover it? Or are you bearing the risk of loss?

People set princess cut diamonds all the time without problems. Of course, it''s not unheard of for a corner to be chipped either. You take the risk. So like I said, find out what the jeweler will do if the stone does indeed get chipped during setting. Get everything in writing too.

hi Diamond! Nope, it''s a RB. I don''t have any experience with princess, sorry!

No thats cool!! Thanks for your help thought!!! I guess I am just being a little to parnoid. I just gotta relax with this whole thing, but I want it to be just right after all she has been waiting 5 years for me lol.

I think your idea is great about going in person to vatche. I think that if you get them or any other reputable jeweler, you don''t have to worry b/c you gotta figure they set (or reset) stones all the time. What worries me is being without my stone in the mail, or sitting around someone''s store, or taking it to a less reputable jeweler just b/c of the horror stories. I actually love the feather in my ring (barely visible at just the right angle) b/c I can always check that it''s mine!
Anyway, I think you''re right to be concerned but I wouldn''t worry with any highly recommended experienced jeweler where you could deliver and pick up the stone in person.
Good luck!!

I''ve been worried about the exact thing lately, as I am sending back my current princess for a different diamond. I am definately worried that they will chip or damage the diamond while removing it from the setting, and then try to claim they recieved it that way. For piece of mind, I am planning on insuring the ring this week while it is in transit. This way, if ANYTHING happens to the diamond, no matter what, i am covered for a replacement. My appraiser said the insurance covers absolutely everything. A couple people here have told me not to worry, and that I don''t really need the extra insurance as diamonds get sent back all the time. But I''m the type to worry. So $130 bucks for insurance is a worthy expenditure to protect losing $8,000.
