Hi all,
I viewed what I considered to be a beautiful diamond today -- it was a cushion brilliant (the first non-modified I had seen). I liked that the fire/brilliance (I don't quite understand the difference between the two) came off the stone in big chunks, rather than lots of tiny little flashes. We also saw a cushion modified that was .03 carats bigger and one grade higher in color and clarity, but the light seemed more chaotic, with lots of little flashes rather than larger ones. This second diamond was priced about $4K ($25K vs. 29K) higher than the first one.
I have four, count'em four, questions that I am hoping you all can help me with.
(1) I understand the basics of the 4 Cs, but am not sure what to look for in the other ratings (table, depth, girdle, etc). I have placed the specs of both options below, and am hoping someone knowledgeable can help me find any red flags that might be hidden in the ratings I do not understand.
(2) The girdle of option number two is "extremely thin to extremely thick." Based upon some internet research, that seems like a red flag, but when I asked what that meant, the salesman said not to be concerned because "they just cut it a little thicker around the outsides." I am skeptical. Is this a serious concern?
(3) The modified cushion has "Strong Blue" fluorescence. Does this negatively affect the value?
(4) Regardless, the first diamond seems like a much better value to me. Can someone who knows much more about diamonds than me can either confirm that this is the case, or explain to me why I am wrong? Thanks!
