Question on shipping FedEx or USPS

I need insurance for over 25k.

Good news is I spoke to Jewelers Mutual again. They said they "recommend USPS" but I can choose whoever I want. They will still cover even FedEx in case of a loss. This is per Vicky in their Personal Ins. Dept.
So.. I''m trying to get to FedEx today.

I personally would have the best peace of mind by going with USPS registered insured. Even though it takes a while, it is definitely the safest way to go. If I decided to ship it UPS or FEDEX to get it there faster, I would constantly be worrying about it and wonder if the insurance company would cover it. Even though they say they would, I would get it in writing before you decide to go this route.

chris elle - I thought so as well, but my jeweler wanted to set it, so I thought that was fine. If you trust your jeweler to set it, by all means go ahead and ask them to - it should not be a problem.

i would never let a local jeweler no matter how trusted set my stone into a designer setting. I''m not sure what setting you are getting but we''ve seen so many designer settings messed up when the local bench folks try an set the stone. personally, it brings me peace of mind to know the designer of the ring the one setting it. i''m glad your worked out successfully though..

I believe if you ask for ''Priority Registered Mail'', you can have delivery within 3 days with USPS and still have up to $25K insurance. Standard registered mail is really slow, but adding a couple buckis for ''Priority'' makes it a lot faster.... Check it out rather than take my word for it. I wouldn''t want you to be dissappointed.

Dave, my post office worker told me it''s not worth the $ to pay for priority registered mail. he said there is one bag and everything goes in and it won''t really move any faster. maybe things have changed but there have been other posters here in various parts of the country and one post office employee that chimed in on a thread that said the same thing.

You know, I had my reservations about the local jeweler setting the stone, but that''s what they said they normally do. I sent an e-mail to Sholdt about an hour ago asking if this is normal practice, if the warranty from Sholdt is still intact, etc. So once I get those answers, I should have a definitive answer for you guys here.

It all worked out great, aside from a small replating issue that I need to discuss with the B&M (and that I documented in the letter to Sholdt).

I actually sent some stones back via USPS registered mail and it didn''t take 15 days. More like 4 days from the Bay Area to the East Coast. If you do USPS Registered Mail you can insure it for up to $5000 I think and it''s trackable via their Registered No. on the USPS website. I think it''s also cheaper in comparison to FedEx, it just takes a longer.

I also know some jewelers, like pearlmans, will strongly suggest sending all stones to the designer. i can list a bunch of gals settings here that were messed up when set locally and if i''m paying $$$$ for a setting, i want it perfect. I also know there are probably hundreds of folks who have the rings set locally and it works out and we will hear the random ones that don''t. it''s just not something I''d personally risk. For the $ i paid for my ring i only want the makers hands touching it and I bought it through pearlmans whom i trust more than anyone

I see.. to be honest, I trusted my jeweler more than a Jared''s or Derco''s, because they''re not a chain, but a larger single store. What would have happened if they messed up? I''m sure I would be inconvenienced, but they would pay for it.

Brilyant -I saw the ring, it''s beautiful and what a great proposal. Congrats. and from one russian speaker (kinda) to another, Privet!!

Kcoursolle- There was no way round it with USPS, it may take 4 days or it may take 15 with the insurance I need. No way to track it while it''s in transit either. I don''t get why they''re willing to insure for up to 25k and have it expedited but more insurance requires more time. Doesn''t make sense to me at all.

I need to trust that my two calls to JM were answered correctly. That while they recommend USPS, i can still ship via FedEx and it will be covered in case of loss.

mrssalvo, I''m with you on the setting process. But then again, I don''t have any jewelers I''d trust with this kind of purchase either.
