Hi all,

I got a question on ring settings. I have seen many pictures of ring settings with ''basket'' or without ''basket'' (I hope I have used the term correctly).

Will the absence of a basket increases the likelihood of the diamond falling off since I am assuming that the diamond ''sits'' in the basket while being held by the prongs.

Thank you all.

nope, if the diamond is seated in the ring prongs correctly it would be just as safe as if it were in a basket type setting.

A properly set stone will sit on the prongs, not on the basket. The basket, however, will give greater structural integrity to the setting, allowing a stone to sit higher without the prongs becoming fragile.

I am trying to find some online pictures, as copyright won''t allow me to scan my books.

Hi Lady_Disdain,

aahh.. I always thought the prongs are there to hold the diamond in place. Didn''t know that the diamond sits on them. Well from an engineering point of view, what you said makes sense. By having a basket, the prongs will be more rigid and more structurally sound.

Well I am contemplating of getting this setting in platinum:

So as you can see, that setting has no basket. Any advice?

Thank you.

That setting is low and prongs are massive. I don''t think it will be a problem with it being structurally unsound.

Its just a 4 prong setting, shouldn''t be a problem.
