My fiance bought me a wonderful ring this past weekend. My question is how can I tell what kind of metal it is? He had told me he wanted platnium or titanium, but I said I was good with white gold, whatever was best for him. I know there is typically stamping inside, but the only marking inside is a stamp saying .51.

The only reason I ask is that I just wanted to start getting ideas for what kind of bands I like and I need to know the metal to do this. I dont want to ask him so that he doesnt think Im being ungrateful since it really doesnt matter other than being specific to band shopping.

Thanks for the help!

I really would just ask... say something like "I need to find a band to match, what kind of metal should I be looking at?" I looked up .51 and that doesn''t seem to be a metal stamp... are you sure there isn''t anything else stamped inside? Are you located in the US? If not, maybe your markings would be different...

Well, I''d take the lowest value metal and ask: "What do think would go best? Should I just get another white gold ring?"

This leaves room for him to either:

a) Say "Yes, another white gold ring would be good". This is great! It looks like you knew it was white gold/whatever all along and you''re fine with it (which I hope you are

)

b) Say "But it''s not white gold/whatever, it''s titanium/platinum/kryptonite!". Awesome, now you can be all excited about it and show that you appreciate the shiny metal!

One thing I''ll add is this: It''s not about what the metal is, what the diamond is like, or how much the whole thing cost. It''s about the feelings behind it. As long as he knows that you know that, you''ll be fine.

Considering that this is a recent purchase by him, I''m 100% with you. I would hold off on asking your fiancee about it directly.

I own both platinum and white gold rings and I can tell you, Im my humble ( novice) opinion white gold looks very similar to Platinum if the WG was plated recently. Since your ring is new, this might be the case. With time, white gold will show a more greyish appearance while platinum stays pretty much the same. When this happens. most WG owners will then sent the rings for plating.( I hope I spelled that right). Nevertheless, there is a feeling of heaviness and higher density in a platinum ring that is hard to describe. I don''t know much about titanium.

If I were you, I would go to a jeweler, shop around for wedding bands and in conversation ask for his/ her opinion as to what metal the ring is. I know is sneaky but a girl gotta do what a girl gotta do. My humble .50 cents and congratulations... You are engaged!

BTW... Whatever metal the ring is, they are all awesome choices.
