Why is it that some AGS reports list specific ratings for Light performance, Polish, and Symmetry, while others do not? Is it safe to assume that all diamonds rated AGS ideal cut also have ideal ratings for the three subcategories?
AGSL has several different formats of reports that are currently on the market as well as a format that was discontinued early in 2009. Some list this information and some don’t. This is further complicated by two different cut grading systems currently in use and a third that was in use until 2005 and for which you occasionally see reports. Can you post a scan of the report on the stone you’re considering and we’ll try to help you understand it?
Sure. The certificates I''m looking at can be viewed at the two links below. I notice most reports on James Allen have the reports without the three ''subratings'' while reports on Whiteflash include the three subratings. Both reports were generated in the past two months.
This question came up while trying to figure out why this 1.02 ct stone is priced similar to the 0.9 ct stones. I realize these two are from different vendors, but the 1.02 ct is priced similar to other 0.9 ct diamonds from the same vendor.
Those are the 2008 version of the ‘Diamond Quality Document’, what they are now calling the ‘platinum’ report. They actually do have the values you’re asking about but they’re located on a flap on the right hand side of the report and it’s outside the scan area. It’s not as bad as it sounds. For a stone to receive a grade of ‘AGS ideal 0’ as a cut grade, it MUST have a 0 in each of the 3 subcategories as well.
The JA diamond has the older AGS DQD. The three grades are located on a RH flap, not pictured, and those grades are for "Light Performance, Proportions, Finish." All 3 must be 0 for the overall cut grade to be 0.
The WF diamond has the new AGS DQD ("Platinum Report"). The ASET image imprint is the newest feature. You can see the three grades printed on the document, and they are now "Light Performance, Polish, Symmetry." Again, all 3 must be 0 for the overall cut grade to be 0.
All versions of the DQD (now Platinum report) since 2005 have offered the 3D light performance metric.
Thanks Neil and John, that''s very helpful information. It certainly helps put my mind at ease to know all ASG diamonds rated "0" for cut will also have ratings of 0 for the three subcategories.
