There is a diamond that I am considering and its is an SI1. The reason is apparently because there is a feather on the table of the diamond. Assuming all the other numbers are good...cut, etc.., is there a specific problem with having a feather on a table that I am not aware of? My understanding is that since GIA rates it as SI1, untrained eye won''t be able to see it?

Thank you

Not so. You would have to see the stone yourself, or at least ask for some magnified picture of it. SI1 are not guaranteed eye clean - although the majority of them are. To make things worse, different people get a different impression of these inclusions: so both IF and I1 sell happily.

Such an inclusiosn would not pose any durability problem. It would not be great if it breaks the surface of the diamond, otherwise the only think that counts is wether and how it shows...

Hi,

As Val said, SI-1 GIA does not necessarily mean that the diamond will be eye-clean.

I would recommend looking at the diamond again in shaded natural light if possible, if this is not possible thn in fluorescent lighting .

Study the table area carefully to see if you can notice the feather.

It may be a non-issue, but it could be a big deal, every diamond is different.

One last note, once the diamond is in a ring, the diamond will invariably get dirty from normal every day wear.

With a diamond that is not "surgically clean" it is much easier to see into the diamond, especially under the table.
