I am just a consumer but I am surprised about all this danger with a cavity. My understanding was that a cavity was really a hole where a crystal or something had fallen out or else a hole shaped by the growth of the diamond and so was not liable to get any worse. I thought a cavity was sealed by the crystal structure unlike a feather which is a crack in the crystal structure. Could one of the experts comment. I am probably wrong though!

I posted this in reply to a thread on the Diamond Hangout board entitled

Cavity in a Diamond - is it OK?

A hole in a diamond is a weak spot compared to an unblemished, solid surface. While a cavity may well be more stable than a fracture, it is a place of less strength and integrity than the surrounding unblemished material.

Cavities come in all sizes. Small ones mean less than big ones. To generalize, would be to simply scare people needlessly. It is good to be informed, but many people enjoy diamonds with cavities present in them so it is not a black or white decision.
