Hi, I am not at all experienced with diamonds so I am hoping you can help. I have a platinum wedding set that I no longer use. The e-ring has 8 prong set round diamonds (4 on each side of the center stone). The matching wedding band has 10 prong set round diamonds with a space in the center to accommodate the low set large e-ring stone (so that the bands can sit flush). I went to a jeweler to ask what the cost would be to melt the rings and make a platinum eternity band using the same diamonds. He offered me a $800 credit for the set toward a new purchase, or would charge me $600 (mainly cost of labor) to make the eternity ring from the existing material. He would not need to add more diamonds (I'm a ring size 4), and he would keep any extra platinum. Is this a fair price? Thank you so much!!

Hopefully a jeweler or appraiser will answer your question, but my understanding is that they ordinarily will sell the metal as scrap because they can't just melt it down and reuse it. Have you seen custom work from the jeweler you talked with? You need to find a picture of what you want the finished ring to look like so that they understand exactly what you want. It may be that they could just order an eternity ring setting and set your diamonds for less than reusing your platinum. But like I said, I hope an expert will come answer you maybe tomorrow!

Thank you so much for your reply. I should clarify--the jeweler plans to scrap all the platinum from my two rings and use different platinum to create the new eternity band. He showed me some sample eternity bands that he has made which were very nice. He can't use an existing setting because of the smaller size of the diamonds we plan to use from my original my rings.
