hi there!

i was wondering if there is a slang word for husband that irish people use? it can be slang or an endearing term.

FI and i were thinking to say as part of our vows

Ringster, I choose you for my {thai word for wife meeyah (not sure of the spelling when translated) - it's a funny word that the thai speaking people at the wedding will chuckle at},...

and then I would say

Mr. Ringster, I choose you for my {irish term for husband}

i don't want to ask my irish relatives cause i want it to be a surprise

thank you!

I can't help since i dont know the language, but i do know of a site that might help.

I ran across this looking for words as well.. They are very nice and a lot of them know the language very well. Hope it helps!!

Ugh, i dont know why the edit didn''t stick!

fear céile = husband
Found it here

I don''t know if this is a formal usage of it or not. So don''t hold me to it

Hello there

Stry Eyes is on the money there. The
most formal term is fear céile
which lit. = 'man of partnership'.

Pronunciation is more-or-less 'FAR kay-leh'.

The guys on irishgaelictranslator.com might
be able to record a soundfile for you, ask away.

If there are any others in that list you want
rough pronunciations for, fire away.

Cool idea btw

thanks so much for the link stryeyes102 and thanks thekinglives for the pronunciation!

we met with our officiant this evening and he had an even better idea!

he suggested that since FI is thai and i am culturally korean and irish, we can do something like:

Ringster, I choose you for my {thai word for wife), my (korean word for wife), my (irish word for wife), my wife

and then i would do the same for husband

Awe!!

That was an awesome idea on his part.. Totally love it. Plus it will be so unique to just the two of you!

Good stuff, three different terms will have
a nice spoken rhythm to it too.

Wife = "bean chéile" (not pronounced
as a (heinz) bean, don''t worry
3.gif
)

It''s ''BAN khay-leh'' where ''kh'' is
formed towards the back of the throat.
If it doesn''t bother you to simplify it
you can revert to ''kay-leh''.

HTH and np!

thekinglives, i just found this website that has free sound file - does it sound authentic?

http://www.erinsweb.com/audio.html

btw, are ya irish? if so, what is up with your handle name?

Ah nice find Ringster, that's perfect!

I am indeed and the handle refers to
my once almost-roadkilled black and white
mog to the left there (Stewie Griffin would
have nothing on this brat
1.gif
). Name +
Irish language is a lot contradictory
isn't it!

Glad to (almost) be of help

That''s a great idea Ringster! It''s a nice way to combine both cultures.
