Why are some diamonds really color reflective, and is this a good quality for a diamond or not?

Hiya Carats!

Do you mean a diamond which shows a good amount of fire or coloured light? If so yes it can be a very nice quality in a diamond, some are cut in such a way which enhances fire. These are called fiery ideal cuts, you may have noticed the term FIC on the forums. Typically these have a steeper crown angle along with a pavilion of no more than 40.6, a smaller table and sometimes extra depth. The trade off with these diamonds is that sometimes they can face up a little smaller for the weight, however these are still popular with some enthusiasts.

Hi Lorelei!
I mean a diamond that reflects the color around it.
ie : blue sky, green trees ect....
Make sense?

Yes, that''s a good thing. It means it''s cut well.

Ditto Ellen. Definitely a good thing. It means that the diamond is reflecting the incoming light back out, no matter the color. A poorly cut stone will leak that light and color instead of reflecting.

If you look at photos of really well cut stones, such as ACA''s or GOG H&A, you can often catch a reflection of the photographer''s clothing.

If you put a colorless diamond in a room filled with bright yellow lighting, the diamond will look brilliant, but colored yellow. Do the same with green or blue lighting and you would find the diamond reflects back the room lighting color. It does not create light on its own, but reflects back from its environment.

When light is white, it is made of a series of spectral colors and most diamonds will break up some of this light just like a prism into colors of the spectrum. We call this effect dispersion or fire. It happens because of the way a diamond is cut AND because of the lighting environment the diamond is in.

Poor cut diamonds reflect and refract less light and leak more. Well cut diamond reflect and refract the best and leak less. Most folks buy decently cut diamonds with good attributes, but well into the compromise zone. Pricescopers tend to buy the really best cut diamonds because of the increased information they have learned. Really, one pays very little extra for a superior cut diamond, but you have to seek them out. Knowledge is key to making such a great choice.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
My diamond does this, so I am happy to learn it is a good quality.
Every time I try to take a close up picture of it, it reflects the black of the camera lens, and comes out dark.
My favorite is under a blue sky
