Question for smartphone owners

I get alerts for text messages and phone calls. That’s it. I don’t get many of those, and my friends don’t call at unreasonable hours, so I don’t bother to turn my alerts off at night.

My sweetie gets alerts for pretty much everything. He often gets into very chatty group chats - frequent alerts - and he has a few friends who apparently have no sense of time, who’ll text any time day or night, so his phone gets turned off at night.

I’ve been in a position of having to leave my phone on 24-7 as an emergency contact, so I don’t text late at night etc. I try to avoid late-night emails, but I suspect most people don’t get alerts for emails, unless they need to do that for work related reasons.

During the day I have the sound on so I hear alerts, as soon as I go to bed, I switch the sound off so I don’t hear them during the night.

I have to have a smartphone for work purposes, and can pick up work e-mails using Exchange/Outlook.

I can also pick up non-work e-mails the Samsung E-mail app that comes with the phone, as well as via Gmails.

I have never had an iPhone, only Androids, and my comments below relate to Android phones.

For the apps that I use, such as e-mails, FB, FB Messenger, WhatsApp, etc., I can choose whether to have a sound and/or vibration or no alert.

I can set sound for media as nothing, as in no sound being played when I click on a video link etc...

I can turn off the sound by setting a "Do Not Disturb" for certain period of time, and allow exceptions such as alarms and callers on my VIP or whatever contact list. SMS/text messages will not sound during Do Not Disturb hours, unless they are on my allowed list.

I can set different ring tone for different people or groups. I can also set different notification sounds or no notifications for different e-mail addresses.

I avoid sending SMS/text after 22:00h to this day; however, I would send e-mails any time of the day including late at night etc., and no one has told me off for doing that yet. Therefore, I can only assume other people also set up their phones not to sound during certain hours.

My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S10+ with dual SIMs, one number for work and one for personal use, without the need to have a separate work or personal phone before dual SIM phones were available.

I recently took out an unlimited data including 5G SIM-only contract for my Samsung Galaxy S10+, and am likely to upgrade and switch to a 5G phone, most likely to be another Samsung, when it eventually reaches my home area, or when the current phone dies like when the battery will not hold its charge etc., whichever is sooner.

Hope the above helps.

DK :))

For those of you who turn your phones to sleep mode, will the alarm still wake you up in the am? I rely on my phone for that!
I set up my notifications depending on what I am waiting on. If I am waiting for a bling IG or email vendor to reply, as a true PSer, I always turn those notifications on!!

Sleep mode, being "do not disturb" on an IPhone, then yes, your alarm will still go off and as mentioned above, you can set it to allow texts or calls from certain folks to come in, for instance, I have it set so my daughter can call in case she has an emergency.

Oh wow! Hmm, I’ll have to explore that feature because that’s very helpful. Thanks for the tip!!

I remember working in Hong Kong in the 80's and seeing business people walking around talking on cell phones...and my thought was "What is so important that you can't wait to get to a phone?"

I only turn on the audible alert for phone calls.
- I do most of my checking of web sites and email on a phone.
- Other things I commonly use are the camera, GPS, Calendar and Contacts
- Love apps like Uber/Lyft, Instacart (for the chat) and Mobile Banking.

That being said I still prefer doing any real typing on my computer...so unless it's quick or urgent, I will often wait until I get to a computer. And if text messages go back/forth more than 2-3 times, I tell the person to call.

I send emails any time but never texts late at night or early in the morning. Usually it depends on what alert settings someone has!

Kenny, i admire your good manners asking these questions so you can be considerate to others
as has been said it depends on the recipients setting

I leave my phone in the lounge now rather than by my pillow in less i have to get up early

I would not worry about when you send an email
Texting i tend to be more careful when i send them depending on the recipient

On having a smart phone
once you have one you will use it for so many things
its just so convenient
I use it for everything
You can get a lot of music on there
Some model of phone sounds better than others

Get one with lots and/or upgradable memory and one that is fast
Im on my 4th start phone
i tend to wear them out rather than update every year like the kids do
you could buy a mid range one to get the hang of it to work out what you'll be using it for

Like i don't play games, i internet and i play Bruce Springsteen, and i email
i don't find actually making calls all that easy

Also i do think its contributed to my now having to wear glasses, so think about screen size and eye strain

i think about how the smart phone brings such affordable and accessible techknowledgy to so many people in developing counteies, it really is a wonderful invention, something i did not appreate untill i got one
