I may be getting a few steps ahead of myself, but here it goes:

My BF and I picked out an AVC in early November, and I am expecting the proposal will be sometime between this Friday and Christmas (I am in graduate school and asked him to wait until my last final was over - I would have been to distracted by the  ) We have been together since High School, and just celebrated 9 years, so this will be a very BIG step for us, our families, and friends who have known us all that time.

Almost everyone I know has a round or princess cut diamond, which makes sense since it seems these are the most common generally. Since I will be seeing ALL my family, his family, and our mutual friends shortly after the engagement I'm expecting to answer MANY questions about the stone. Maybe I am incorrect and people will just oo and aaa and gush, but I want to be a little prepared.

-What questions do you get asked about your unique stones?
-How far into detail do you go with an answer? (I mean, I could say it's a Cushion, but to me it's so much more than that!!)
-After PS and all the diamond knowledge I don't want to make people's eyes glaze over....
-Any general advice is much appreciated

Thank you all. If it weren't for you I would never have met my perfect cut or found my stone. FFI and I really appreciate all that we have learned, and I cannot wait to share pictures with you all!!

Well, you made a great choice! I imagine there will be questions since most people have only seen rounds, princess cuts, and maybe emerald cuts and ovals.

I'd just say that it is a newly cut antique style cushion. I would think that is all most people could handle or want to know. When you show it off here, we will be the ones to appreciate how unique and beautiful it is! :appl:

Diamondseeker, that is a great description. Short and sweet. Thank you!

if people ask then I say I have a "square cushion". If they ask further questions then I would say "hearts and arrows square cushion"...but no one has ever asked! most people just tell me how sparkly it is :)

I'm pretty sure I'd just say "it's a cushion cut" and if they ask "what's that?" add "see, like a little pillow?" Branded, un-branded, antique, newly cut -- those are facts for bling hounds only. If you sense that someone IS a bling hound -- go for it! Otherwise: risk glazed eyes and wrinkled foreheads.

ETA: I have an asscher but hardly anyone knows what that is -- so most of the time I say "Square emerald cut" -- because at least people have *heard* of Emerald cuts. HA!

Even though marquise diamonds are out of style, all anybody ever says about my 1.19 carat marquise brilliant is "Wow, that's beautiful. it sparkles so much.'
Young girls often add,"What cut is that? I've never seen that before and I like it."
I don't think you need to worry about getting a fancy cut so long as it's a beautiful stone.

Not worried, just super excited! I want to make sure that I know what to expect from questions, since it is a more unusual shape. Thanks for the advice :)
