As previously posted here, diamond size tends to be somewhat geographical.

I am curious to know what size diamonds are Canadian girls wearing and what province are you from.

Cindy

I''m wearing a super-ideal hearts and arrows one carat round. This is by far a large stone in Ontario, from what I can tell.

What''s your dream size?

Cindy,

I''m from Alberta, Canada and I''m not really sure what the average size of diamond they where here but i know 13 years ago my .43 to people was large...lol...I now recently own a 1.16 carat diamond ring which i am going to try and post a pic, but the jeweller told us its not uncommon for a man to be spending 10,000 on a ring although i do think that even a carat here is very very large to most people.

Most of the women I know have at least 1 ct. My sister-in-law has a 2 ct. If I were to get one for my GF, it''ll be at least 1.5 ct. But then I''m in Lotusland. Elsewhere in BC, I would imagine 0.5 ct is enough.

I just got my 1.16 ct. princess cut, and in the jewellery stores here in Toronto they tell me it looks very big...

(I am just writing a review of my purchase from Dirt Cheap Diamonds, with pictures. Look for it there.)

Most of the people I know around here has around 1 ct.

HI:

Four girls in my family--mine is a 1.46 RB; one sis has a 2.16 RB, another a 1.10 marquise, and the last a .75 RB. All girls Alberta grown

, with very different tastes, and very different hand/finger sizes.

cheers--Sharon

I live in Ontario.

Mom: .27
Sis: .37 (three-stone)
Best Friend: 1carat (three-stone)
My sister's sis-in-law: about .25
My sister's mom-in-law: about .45 ctw (a mish mash of many small stones)
My sister's step-mom-in-law: about .33

Mine 1.5c Round Brilliant set in a Michael. B setting with 1.5c of diamonds on three sides for a tcw of 3cts....

So, upon looking around it seems like the size around here though is less than .5c

(I just moved back to Ontario temporarily and went to insure my cars, ring etc...and the lady at the insurance agency said she has never seen one like mine)

I just got one for my girlfriend...soon to be fiancee!.... .86 ct princess. We live in Toronto, Ontario.

I''ll chime in on what I think is average around here. I still maintain that a carat is large by most standards, judging by the reaction that the vast majority of people had to my rock when they first saw it.

I do, however, think that the average size of an engagement ring is climbing. We''re seeing more and more 0.75''s. As for fortheloveofdiamonds rock, well, that''s just huge by Canadian standards, as far as I can tell. You go, girl!

But like we''ve always said around PS, it really depends on the crowd you hang with. If you''re in a really ritzy neighbourhood, all bets are off.

Thanks Daniela!!!! I love my ring!

Good question.

My opinion lines up with Daniela. I bought a .9 ct solitaire from USACerted. Also, I know Brocksgirl just got a .9 as well. Both in Toronto. In my circle, it''s pretty big. I don''t know anyone in the 1.5 - 2.0 range. To me, that''s really big.

I like this question. Biggest I''ve seen is 0.5 carat. I''m in Quebec! But when my time comes, I will be demanding a 1.7 to 2.0 carat (even if I have to buy some of it myself

AllyCat,

I love your take-charge attitude! There''s a girl who knows what she wants and isn''t afraid to go after it.

It seems to really vary, eh ! I''m in NB and the sizes seem to be around .5c of less. A few girls at work have .75 ish stones. The B&M stores say the trend is around 1c ... but, they would say that.

Tks for all who responded ... I find it pretty interesting to know these variances.

:)

Hi I just read that you are from ontario and have a mIchael B setting, I want one as well but am in Toronto, Ontario. Can I please see a picture of your ring? Also where did you purchase the setting from? Anyone in Toronto that carries the Michael B line. I love his work soo much!!! After a BAD experience with a local jeweller and my horrible custom made ring that turned out lopsided and unfinished I want to have the ring of my dreams that I can finally wear!
Thank you soo much!

Hey Dommie:

I am sorry your custom job went terribly awry. My husband didn''t buy my ring in Canada, he is American and we lived in the States up until last month... We moved b/c he will be deploying overseas for a year and I wanted to be near my family for the year.

I got my Michael B. from Pearlman''s Jewelers! You can read about my experience here .

I love my Michael B. It was expensive, but I truly think it was 100% worth it. Bill Pearlman is a fantastic guy!!! Give him a call and see what he can do for you.

Good Luck!

HI:

I have no wish to hijack this thread--but did any of my fellow Canadians read a recent article in their local newspapers about the (multilevel) petition to the Canadian gov''t to have the luxury/excise tax abolished? I read one in the Calgary Herald yesterday. I know this issue has been brought to the Commons on many occasions (since 1996 and most recently in 2004), and an article was published on the Canadian Jewellers Association website regarding the same. The tax is 10%--which is automatically applied to all jewellery (even costume) and diamonds (luxury goods essentially) in Canada.

cheers--Sharon
