...unmount a diamond WITHOUT damaging either the diamond or setting? Can I trust a basic neighborhood jewelry store to do this? When I proposed, I bought a temporary solitaire setting from a jeweler who used to be local to me, but we have since moved out of state. I have to return my setting, as the 45 day return period is almost up and my now fiancee

and I are having a custom setting made. The owner of the jewelry shop was very nice and suggested I simply have my diamond removed locally and just ship back the setting to him, so long as I don't send back a damaged setting so that he can re-sell it. So will a jeweler be able to unmount a diamond without damaging the setting or prongs? Is this easy enough to do? Thank you for your replies.

Is it a prong setting?
Hello there. Yes it is. Thanks,

Cubs

No guarantees, but this would be the easiest of setting types to remove the stone from- meaning the least risk of damaging stone or setting...
One more thought...
is it a round diamond?
An exception might be a stone with a point- such as a marquise, pear or heart shape.
These are still easiest to remove from a prong setting but with a slightly higher risk of damaging the stone while doing so

Thank you Rockdiamond.

Will they have to cut or break the prongs, or is there a less damaging way to get the stone out?

You''re welcome cubs!

It''s a fairly simple matter to bend the prongs back off a round diamond.
There should be no cutting or breaking of prongs
