Should the date of a GIA report be of concern? I was recently sent specs on a stone with a GIA that dates back to February 2009 and am wondering if I should insist on seeing a more current report? I imagine the stone could have been previously purchased and set, then returned as part of an upgrade (in which case there may be wear and tear)? The price appears to be consistent with similar stones of similar quality.

Also, the GIA provided is a photocopy (and not a scanned original), which seems odd. Would I need the original for insurance purposes?

Your thoughts on this are greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I'm not sure about your insurance question, but although 2009 isn't that incredibly long ago, your right to have concerns. If the vendor is unwilling to have the stone re certed, you should make sure you have it appraised by an experienced appraiser when it reaches your hot little hands. Your correct in assuming it could have been damaged during this time. Though its been my experience that vendors will not trade in a damaged stone. Or it could be a stone that has been in inventory for a long time. I would definitely ask the vendor if this was a trade in diamond.
