your setting should be fine, 18k just has more purer gold content than that of 14k. As for toughness 18k will likely bend before it breaks off, where as 14k maybe bend less than 18k before it breaks off, 10k maybe become more brittle, and so on, less gold, means that that they will retain their shape better than those of purer mix but will be more brittle and break instead of just bending out of shape, does that make sense?
 
It does make sense. My concern is that I know many companies use platinum for their prongs, would using yg to hold the stone in place be okay?

yes of course, I''m getting all 18 k yellow gold setting prongs included, Many pricescopers have gold prongs for the head and have not had any problems.
