I had originally posted this in answer to another thread (here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/time-for-a-cool-change-meet-my-princess.99490/page-2) but felt it might be wiser to make it its own thread.

I have some questions and I am a complete NEWBIE. :)

Question 1: I noticed some people upgrading center stones in a ring with different sizes/shapes/etc., but keeping the same setting. (For example, I've been tracking JustJulia's voyage and she started with a round, and has since had emerald cuts, a princess, a pear, & an oval) How is this possible? What I mean is, is their ring just the kind that has the center stone's setting separate from the rest of the ring so you can have any size or shape that you want? Or, is it possible to have other shapes put into ANY ring? I ask because I've just recently gotten engaged and decided on a 6x6mm pink sapphire for my center stone (to fit the setting), but I also LOVE the idea of an oval, or maybe even a round? The thing is, I fell in the love with the setting before I ever knew what kind of center stone I wanted, and after looking at a number of other settings, I just never found one that had (almost) EVERYTHING that I wanted like this one does. But I'm not really sure I WANTED it to HAVE TO BE a square 6x6mm. (I'm going to try to post a photo of it so you can see what it is/what it looks like)..so I had to go with what that ring could 'house.' (Is that the right terminolgy?)

Question 2: If I were to change my center stone, what is the typical cost to have it remounted? If I got it re-set at the place where I purchased the setting, but the center stone wasn't purchased through them, do you think that would drive the price higher? (The current center stone was not purchased through them. Fiance brought it to them when he was ready to purchase the ring and they set it).

Question 3: I am also on the look-out for a radiant cut pink sapphire. I have NEVER seen one. When I say that, I mean that even a reputable site like TheNaturalSapphireCompany only has radiants like what www.radiantcut.com 's website describes as: "a radiant simply means a princess with the corners cut off, which is how some generic "radiants" are deceptively presented." Is it possible to find a TRUE radiant cut sapphire? And, if so, how about in a PINK sapphire? :-| *sigh* I just feel so discouraged by all that I've seen and how much I've googled and looked and I even emailed radiantcut.com looking for information but haven't received a reply. I'm just not sure where to go from here, so that's why I'm turning to all of you experts. :) If you can point me in the right direction, I would be so grateful.

Question 4: In light of question 3, I'm thinking of switching the pink sapphire to a pink moissonite because it has more scintillation than my sapphire...and although my sapphire is lovely (and has one of the best cuts I've ever personally seen in a princess cut), it's not exactly the COLOR I wanted, and obviously it doesn't have as much sparkle as a diamond would. Is a moissonite okay? Is it hard enough (like a sapphire) for every day wear? Is it 'junky' because it's not a 'main stream' stone? I've added a picture of one that I've been eyeing. It is exactly 6x6mm (which I couldn't believe when I saw that).

Okay, thank you soo much for answering all of my questions!!!

Sincerely,
Rachel

Also wanted to post a few alternate views of my ring so you can see the mounting better.

PS The last 2 photos reflects the true color much better. The first 2 were taken beneath yellow lighting, which makes the color look more pink (which i prefer..LOL). Also, those last 2 pictures makes the sapphire look really "alive" and all I can say is I had just cleaned the ring and it must have been ideal lighting conditions, because it usually looks more like what I posted in my previous post.)

I posted a longish reply in my other thread in "show me the ring" ("time for a cool change"). I hope this helps.

Just my feeling, but moissy seems to be kinda dark and moody. Not my taste. There''s something about owning a diamond, that, well, makes me swoon. Moissy also has that double refraction, that makes it fakey looking, to me.

I think your saphire is very lovely.

Thanks for your reply Julia. When you say it seems kinda dark and moody, do you mean the color, or how it reflects light back, or what? Also, if I could own a diamond, honey, I WOULD..LOL. The problem is, I want a colored stone, and there is NO WAY I can afford a pink diamond - at least not at this point in my life. HA HA. And, of course, the setting I have, I now realize, has a permanent head which would only allow for maybe a .5 mm difference other than what I have..which would mean the smallest diamond I could have would probably be 5.5 x 5.5 mm square ... and if i wanted it pink?? Forget it. LOL!!

Also, is a moissanite a crappy stone, or is it okay as long as I'm happy with it? I just don't want to put something in my beautiful mounting that would be termed 'junk,' you know? :)

Also, for my sapphire, I agree that it is a lovely stone, but it's not quite the hue I was wanting (and we did searches like crazy bringing in A LOT of stones trying to find the color I was looking for, to no avail), but I think what kills me the most is that it seems so 'dead' compared to a diamond's fire. And, I think it be so large might make that more noticeable to me. I am adding 2 more photos so you can see that sometimes I feel like I can just stare right through to the center of the stone (and see the band of the ring!! Or am I just crazy?) And, sometimes I also see that 'X' that princess cuts are known for. So that sometimes bothers me A LOT, too.

Anyway, thanks again!

Moissanite is considered a sim on here as far as I know. You lose the edit option after 20 minutes, but you can just msg admin and ask.
