Hello:

(Diamond Related Question)

I live in the Metro DC Area (VA/MD/DC) are there any retail stores that regularly/consistently provide ASET images or Idealscope or DiamXray images or make images upon request--or provide tools for viewing. I went to a few mall/stores and when I asked for any other information besides the GIA report I got some blank stares.

Thank you
John

JA is in the D.C. area.

Yes, but according to their website they only accept visitors in their New York office, not the MD one.

I''d still call and ask. I do rememebr people being accomdated there, but that was a long time ago... Sorry but am coming up empty for you. Now Quest is in the area, but not sure they have all the tools you want... But many of us have dealt with them over the years... I''d defintely give them a call... Not a waste of your time, and they do fabulous work. Just an FYI...

Best of luck!!

I think IS and ASET tools would reveal their diamonds as being poor performers.
So either they pretend to be ignorant or really are, and I'm not sure which is worse.

Good cut is not an accident; it grinds away much more rough than the usual stones, which are cut to retain as much weight as posible, not light-perform as well as possible.

I'd expect anyone selling well-cut stones to embrace reflector technology and use it as an educational tool when dealing with customers.

Save money and get a better stone.
Buy online from a PS vendor.

Nothing sets a salesperson back on their heels quite like a customer who just happens to have an idealscope in their purse. They’re not very expensive and, among other things, the fact that you have one immediately flags you as an internet educated customer and it’ll immediately get you forwarded to one of the top salespeople who already know they have to give competitive prices or lose the sale. In many cases, that alone is worth the cost.

If they''re not familar with it, let them look at it and tell them what it''s for. Customers with their own tools is seen as a security risk at stores so do allow them to inspect it and play with it first. Who knows, you may convince them to get one too.

I scared enough vendors pulling out my own ideal scope and ideal light. haha.

I would like to thank everyone who posted so far:

Summary: So far i will check JA and Quest and see if they provide any optical tools/images

I do have a little idealscope and aset but am afraid to bring it and just start examining diamonds at a store i just walked into. I do not know, if I should be up front about what I am looking for in terms of good optical symmetry or if I should see what they have first and then take out my idealscope.

thank you
john

Tell them what you are looking for, a stone that shows well in an Idealscope and/or ASET (among other things). If they have the tools, use theirs, if they don’t have them, offer to use your own. If they refuse on both counts, walk away without further ado. More likely is that they will find it to be an interesting request and will do their best to accommodate you. Honesty is a wonderful strategy. It''s what you want from them, it''s only reasonable for you to do the same in return.
