I had posted this on diamond hangout, but it might go better here....
Does GIA have a new certificate format???? I''ve been looking at GIA certs online, and they state the kinds of inclusions (Feather, pinpoint, cloud, etc.), but they don''t plot the location of the inclusions.....I would really like to have some idea where they are located within/on the stone....I guess you have to call and ask....Does anyone know why they are doing this????

Sounds like a mini cert.
No -there have been no anounced changes

They are actual certs listed on the vendors'' websites....if I become more computer literate I will attach one.....

It says diamond dossier grading report....does that matter? Is that a regular cert?

Maxine, if I am not mistaken, that is a small cert from the AGS lab. But don''t quote me.

Maxine,

GIA has a product called Diamond Dossier that they''ve been selling since 2000 that does not contain a plotting diagram. They include a photomicrograph and a girdle etching as a regular part of this service, neither of which is included in their regular report.

These reports are substantially less expensive than their main product and many dealers choose to buy them to document their smaller stones for this reason.

Neil, (or anyone else following this with interest),

Thanks for the explanation. Maxine also started a thread on this in the Diamond Hangout, and... as Kalli mentions there, I had been told what they''d been told, that with the diamond having been lazer inscribed, the plotting was not seen as necessary. So...

- are the stones with a more full report also lazer inscribed.
- my .9 carat diamond came with the dossier, too. Probably if I go to find my appraisal, it will show me where my main inclusion is. I''m good to go, right?
- should anyone who buys a diamond, being described as GIA certed, and gets the dossier, have a reason to request the more complete variety?

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Ira,

Here
is the difference as explained by GIA.

The primary service offered by GIA-GTL with regard to diamonds is a stone examination with the results reported on a document that they call a ‘Diamond Grading Report’. This service does not come with a laser inscription although if the stone has an inscription, it will be listed in the comments section of the report. GIA and others will, for an additional fee inscribe just about anything you want onto the stone.
The plotting diagram is included primarily for the purpose of identifying the individual stone, a purpose that is reasonably well done by a girdle inscription.

In the case of the Diamond Dossier service, the inscription service is included as part of the product that they are selling although if you want something other than the GIA logo and the report number there is an additional fee.

People regularly find that the plotting diagram is useful for other purposes as well. For example, it's sometimes helpful to know WHY it was graded an SI1 and this can usually be gleaned from the diagram. The remainder of the information is the same for both types of report.

In neither case do they call this process certification nor do they call any of their products certificates.

Thanks, Neil!! So I guess you have to call or see the diamond to find out where the inclusion is located.....Which you do anyway, because it''s hard to tell exactly where the inclusion is, anyway (how deep, etc.).......
