I was doing a search on Blue Nile for 2 carat diamonds and noticed an oddity when comparing two nearly identical stones. Here are the stats and prices of both:

Diamond 1: 2.08 Ideal G VVS1 $31,170

Diamond 2: 2.00 Good G VVS1 $31,335

I was hoping someone could explain to me how, with two diamonds that have nearly identical specs, the diamond with a "Good" cut could be priced higher than a diamond with an "Ideal" cut, especially when the Ideal cut is bigger.

I checked the other specs on the two diamonds and became even more confused because Diamond 1 has "excellent" polish, while Diamond 2 only has "good" polish. Why on earth is Diamond 2 more expensive? Is there something I''m missing?

The first one has an HCA score of 4.3, and the second one 5.9.

I wouldn't buy either one.

This one is much better cut.
Cut is much more important to a diamonds beauty than color or clarity.
Those two G VVS1s from Bluenile have very expensive clarity and color grades, but they are poorly cut.

Oh wow, really?

I''m a diamond newbie for sure but it surprises me to hear that an Ideal cut from Blue Nile can be described as poor. Yikes! What is your opinion on Blue Nile Signature Ideal diamonds? This one, for example?

Unfortunately "Ideal cut" is an ambiguous term.
Protect yourself with diamond education.
At the top of this screen click on KNOWLEDGE, then click on Advanced Tutorial.
Read all the pages.

The last Bluenile Signature Ideal you just posted is a much better cut.
It gets a HCA score of 0.9.

Scores under 2 are worth looking into more by getting Idealscope and ASET pics.
Unfortunately Bluenile refuses to provide these.
They also refuse to provide actual pics of the stone that are large enough to be of any use.
They are not my favorite vendor, but this diamond may be very good.

Perhaps one of our experts with more expertise than I can advise you on this stone.

BTW, here is where I'm getting those HCA scores.
