Question about colorless diamonds...

Quick question... how decipherable to the naked eye would an F color stone be next to a D? Both would be step cuts, with the F's about .33ct and the D's around .50ct. I'm having a heck of a time finding the size and shape I need in the same color (F). Do you think I am going to be able to see a difference in the color with these guys side-by-side? I was hoping I might get away with it, since I'm at my wit's end. TIA!

It depends how “color sensitive”you are and probably more important is how obsessive you would be looking for color differences. Upside down in white paper you might possibly discern a hint of difference. Set face up in a ring that is not static and with different size stones? very difficult. It might be worth looking… if you can handle it not being perfect that is lol

Kind of sensitive and very obsessive. lol They're replacement stones, so I won't see them in person before being set. I have a photo, but really can't discern much. The traps are D and the bullets are F. I could have them shipped to me first, but it will hold up the project, and my patience is about shot (the ring had to be redone, but DK is being his usual awesome self). It occurred to me the color difference might be noticeable, and I'm really not a diamond girl.

It is more an mind-clean issue IMHO.

If it bothers you now on paper, then it is likely to bother you IRL as you know there is a difference in colour grade.

Perhaps ask DK for more photos/videos in different lighting to help you decide.

I think @dk168 sums it up nicely - if it was me (although I’m not particularly colour sensitive!), it feels more like a mind-clean issue.

I have a bezel-set set of bracelet, necklace, ring and earrings where I bought diamonds ranged D-M in colour… and found it difficult to discern even between the 0.2-0.4ct D-I diamonds in the bracelet.

I think you'll be completely fine, especially with the very different cuts and reflection patterns. I am insanely hue-sensitive in blue sapphire but fairly insensitive to differences in colorless diamonds. There is so much brilliance and fire and the influence of local color and lighting and basket/head metal color. Speaking of which -- if your use case is YG, it has to be a non-issue.

I would have no trouble using D with F in in white metal. We have an antique bar pin with a dozen or so quarter-ct diamonds of high (excellent) color (D, E, F) in platinum, along with one that must have been a replacement (maybe an "I"). I never noticed (or suspected) any differences until we had it appraised. After, I could pick out the later replacement with some concentration but there is no way I could tell the Ds from the Fs.

How much will you see them face up vs from the side? Is one tilted more than the other?
If you are sensitive to seeing the color- from the side and differently tilted might make it more noticeable than directly face up like the pic? Same as for facet pattern- if one gets a tilt window and the other doesn’t, is that going to change color perception?
Would it help you decide if you were to find out ‘X’ famous designer brand would never do this mix or typically might?
Does who did the color grading matter?

Some things to think about - you know you better than us.
Sorry the ring had to be remade -for whatever reason. Sounds frustrating - wits end now is better than later tho.

I'm pretty sure I* would not be able to tell. I have an I and a J side stone in my 3 stone ring (see avatar), and can not tell the
difference. They have much more tint than what you're looking at, and supposedly a wider range of tint being on the low end.

I would think anything in the D/E/F range would be very hard to detect. I think any different look would be due to the various cuts and slants of the stone (and this would show up even if they were all Ds).

Are the colors mentioned from GIA reports?
I ask because if they’re vendor grades, they’re approximate anyway.
If accurately graded, F and D should not be noticeable to 95% of us. 5 % can see anything
