Greetings diamond lovers: I am having a three stone diamond ring made. The center stone is a 2.9 carat RB that is G in color. Would it be better to spend more money for a higher color grade and get smaller stones (.65 each side that are a G or H in color) or go with .75 each side that are larger but an in color. Any help would be awesome. Many thanks!

Chelsea, I think you missed out the colour? Generally it is advised to keep within 2 colour grades for side stones, are these GIA or AGS graded?

I assume you were going to say "an I in color", so I''d say that you can probably do that, but personally, I''d like to stick closer to G/H. If you''re spending that much money already, the little bit extra for one color grade higher would be worth it to me.

I would not go as low as an I for side stones for 10 points difference. If you can get G 0.65ct stones, I''m sure it will be beautiful. I rather not have any potential noticeable color difference for the extra 10 points that probably may not be visible. You want the center stone to be the life of the party.

I think I''d try to keep it within one colour grade difference. I don''t think it''s worth it to go too far out for a slightly bigger stone.

If the sidestones are well-cut, you really shouldn''t be able to tell the difference between G and I. My center stone is an I and my surprise diamonds are actually F-G, so it''s kind of the opposite of what you''re doing, but I can''t tell the difference.

Oh thank you all for your responses. I am going to purchase hearts on fire for the side stones so the quality will be excellent. I am trying to decide between a G or H in a .65 carat verses a I in a .75 carat stone. I really want to compliment the 2.9 center stone and not detract from it since it is a beauty. Does anyone have any other thoughts or is there anything else that I should consider? You are all amazing!

Hi Chelsea I put in your other thread MissGotRocks ring; I think it was a 2.22 center stone with .33 side stones. I think .65 carats H would be lovely with your 2.9.
here is the link https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/help-with-three-stone-ratio-for-a-2-9-rb-center-stone.92223/ Her ring size is close to yours too.

Well, if it''s HOF you''re buying (or any equivalent "superideal" cut), I think that would clinch the decision for me. I''d have no problem going with the I, as an ideal cut I will face up nice and white! I think the decision point for me would be which size side stones complement the center stone better, rather than the color, since all of these will look white.

Thanks again. You all have very valid points. At some point, I think that I just need to make a decision and go with it. I don''t think I will go wrong either way. My hubby would prefer to go with the 6.5 stones that are a better quality than go for bigger .75 stone, despite that the jeweler believes that the .75 is the way to go. My finger is not huge. My ring size is a 5 3/4 but my finger size is a 4 1/2 (I have bigger knuckles). You are all so informative. I wish that I knew about this website and started researching a long time ago. I really appreciate all the pictures and advice! Chelsea

I always thought that three stone rings with smaller side stones look better so I''d go for the smaller whiter option.

I''m voting for the larger sides. I color in .75ct (esp in HOF) will not face up ''yellower'' than a nearly 3ct G. IMHO.

Good luck, I can''t wait to see it!
