I have a 2.5 carat RB currently in a 6-prong cathedral setting, but would like to add 2 side pears, which I understand will change my setting so that 4 prongs hold my center stone (at least, that''s the most aesthetically pleasing arrangement).

I have a question about how well-protected the stone will be from chipping, as I have read a few horror stories here. Can someone reassure me that 4 prongs are perfectly okay and that chipping is uncommon? There is a particularly horrifying story I read here of someone whose diamond practically split in half after an accident involving the car door... Good grief.

My fiance and I have decided *not* to insure the ring, as we can stomach the cost of replacing it if something should happen. However, I would prefer to protect it as much as possible. Is 6 prongs significantly safer than 4 prongs?

My diamond has a "thin to medium" girdle if that makes any difference in chipping/splitting potential.

just a question, do you want six prongs or four prongs on the center? four prongs will have slightly thicker prongs instead of 6 prongs won''t be so thick per prong if that makes sense. I think six prongs looks just as pleasing as a four prong but its personal preference see attached.

Hi D&T, thanks for the photo reference! I think I prefer 4 prongs for this setting. I wouldn''t want 6 prongs. Just my personal preference!

Well, four prongs certainly gives you more exposed girdle area. I have a 2.22 stone in a four prong mounting with round sidestones. Fortunately, I have not chipped the girdle - just had it checked the other day to make sure - but I am well aware it can happen. It just takes one bang and it is chipped. That''s not to say that a six prong set diamond can''t chip either - it can be chipped on the facets as well or can be crushed as was the story you remembered happening to another PSer.

However, that is why I insure my ring. The insurance company is betting that it doesn''t happen and I''m betting that it will. It is the only way to wear it and enjoy it and not worry about something like that happening. I too like the look of four prongs with sidestones so I take the added risk.

Your decision not to insure is a personal one. Buying a 2.5 carat stone twice in a lifetime is a whole lot of diamond change though!
