Hey all,

I purchased a diamond recently that was advertised as 0.82ct but when I looked at the AGS cert, I noticed the it was 0.826 ct. So here''s my question does the diamond industry not round up? Weird question but I''m an engineer and to me this seems counterintuitive.

Thanks,
Hari

Your question is answered on the AGS report. Uncertified diamonds get "rounded up" sometimes by the outfit promoting the stone of choice. This certainly tends to happen more and more flagrently (did I spell that right?) when dealing with multiple stones on a setting.

Fortunately the industry rounds down.

Reliable places round down (such as AGS) and sketchy outfits round up! For example, there is a major price jump at certain levels, i.e., 1 carat. So if you get it certified by the right place and it is LESS than a full carat, even if it is .996, you wouldn''t want to pay the jump right? Think of it as a good thing for the buyer!

Hey Hari,

I'm an engineer also and when I bought my diamond, the GIA report said 0.81ct but when it was weighed in front of me by the jeweler who sold it to me, it came in at 0.818ct, so I call it an 0.82ct. So yeah, it appears that they do round down. Not to worry though. Yours is closer to 0.83, so just call it an 0.83ct!

By convention, they round down unless the third digit is a nine. Then they round up. I''ve tried finding an AGSL report with a nine in the last digit. Haven''t found one yet. Lots of eights and zeros but no nines.

FTC rules say that if the third digit is a five, you can round up. Luckily the diamond industry is toughter than FTC regs.
