Hello everyone,

So I've been shopping around for a cushion stone the past few weeks. I've seen a bunch of jewelers and one of them said something yesterday about carat size that confused me a bit as I don't know what to make of it.

Basically, I'm flexible with size (and price too, although I do have a maximum budget for the stone itself being around 7000$). So I said I'm looking for anything between 1 carat and 1.25, although I'd like clarity minimum of SI 1, and color minimum of G. He said, that he can't really find a stone for me until I narrow it down more in the carat size. He says that I either need to be between the range of 1 - 1.15 or 1.15 - 1.25. For both of those ranges he says that you really don't see any difference between 1 - 1.15 or 1.15 - 1.25 (the difference is so small, no one really notices). That's why he says better to take something at 1.01 then 1.09 for example, because you're paying for the extra 8 points and you don't really see a difference. What do you guys think about a statement like this?

I'm going to check a cushion stone today (VVS1, G, 1.09, no fluorescence, 6.04 X 5.04 @ 7000$), but is 1.09 a weird type of carat size? Should I just stick with something like a 1.01? Or do I need to go above the 1.15 range like the above jeweler stated to really notice a size difference?

Very confused!

What you mean by "weird" carat size? I think if the stone is what you are looking for, its fine to go with a 1.09 ct instead of a 1.01 ct.

Lots of people can see a difference between 1.0 and 1.15 and between 1.15 and 1.25. I think you just need to decide the specs you want and the amount you can afford and get the biggest stone that meets those criteria.

You are looking at cushions? I think it depends on what you like. I would look at a bunch of them in various sizes and shapes of cushions. Then let that determine what you want. Some people like more rectangular or more square. I wouldn't let him narrow you down to size without seeing several.

I see...

Your jeweler is putting strange limitations on your selection process. I might shop around for other jewelers because it seems a little like this one is leading you astray.

Its true, if you are talking about 5 points or even 10 points difference, you cannot *really* see it. But that logic suggests you should not get a 1ct diamond either ;)) I mean, you won't notice the difference between a 1ct and a 0.95ct. right? Well then, you should get a .90ct, because you can't see the difference... and on and on. Anyways, that argument fails because of reductio ad absurdam -- you can extend the argument until it becomes ridiculous.

You were clear to your jeweler about what you wanted. He should be showing you at least five diamonds in your budget that have different balance of the fours Cs. And then you can compare them. Don't get corralled into buying the diamond *he* wants you to buy.

thanks dreamer. that makes sense to me.

Are you set on your jeweler? While investing so much money into one thing is a daunting task, PS has a lot of reputable vendors that you can order diamonds from. While I agree that you can tell the different between a couple points here and there, overall a bigger diamond is a bigger diamond. And quite frankly, a 1.09 that is deep is going to look just like a .99 that is cut more shallow. You really need to look at the diamond to see what you want.
