Question About Appraisals

Hi, all. Regarding appraisals, is it typical for the appraisal to be in line with the true value of the stone, or are they typically higher or lower? I know this is a silly question, but I don''t know if a diamond appraisal is typically intended to anticipate future replacement cost, or if they represent the current actual value of the stone.

I know there are appraisers that frequent this site, and I''d be very appreciative if you would elaborate on the process.

I insure most jewelry for the purchase price initially, because it seems crazy to pay a premium based on a very inflated amount.
