Hello Everyone,

I have heard that this is the place where diamond experts are and are willing to give advice to us novices :) Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give.

I hope I am posting in the right area. I have located a diamond I am interested in and wanted to see if it is really as good as I think it is before purchasing. Here are the details of the stone:

1.14 Round brilliant
F VVS2
EX Polish
EX Symmetry
EX Cut
57% Table
60.3% Depth
34 Crown
40.8 Pavilion
Medium Faceted Girdle
No Fl. No Culet
6.76x6.78x4.08
What would a good price be for this diamond?
Will it be brilliant, fiery and such?

Another question I have is that I want to get a temporary white gold 6 prong solitaire 2mm with plat. prongs just until I can find a more elaborate plat. setting that I really love. I haven't really seen any that screams "this is the ONE". The cost is under 400 for the temporary WG setting. I don't want to be stuck with the setting in a year or so. Could I pass it down to say a friend or family member to set another diamond in when it is their turn to get married? I guess my question is, after a setting is made to fit my diamonds dimensions will it be useless for any other diamond in the future? If it can be used again, (with a diamond that is say 1ct)will it have to have new prongs put in or major work in order to reuse it? Just wondering what others do with their plain settings when they change to another that they really like later on.

Does anyone have an idea of how much independent appraisal run on something like this and how long an appraisal takes?

Thanks again I will keep studying the information out there and on this site. Great info!

Welcome Tonbo!

Most of us are just consumers, you will be able to tell who the experts are, but I will gladly do my best to help you!

The diamond has excellent proportions and has great potential. You could drop colour and clarity if you wished without visual sacrifice but this is a personal preference so feel free to ignore that advice!

Pricing depends on whether the diamond is available through a store or online, the former is typically more expensive but you can use the search tool above to compare prices of similar online diamonds.

As to the setting it may be reusable, tell the jeweller who dismantles it that you hope to reuse it and he can bear this in mind as he works. As to whether the head and prongs are reusable it depends on the size and shape of the diamond that might be used in the future but a new head could be added to the shank.

Appraisals, to the best of my memory they can run $ 100+ and upwards, here is an excellent article on the appraisal process. Timeframe, will depend on the appraiser's workload but if you are in a particular hurry, tell your appraiser and they may be able to accomodate you.

Thanks Lorelei for the advice.

I am looking at a setting from White Flash called Sarah''s Surprise (gorgeous and the sales rep is amazing and very helpful) but am concerned that I won''t be able to find a wedding band to fit against it. Maybe there are more experienced consumers out there that can visualize this diamond in this setting. My husband is worried that it might look more like a cocktail ring than an engagement ring. It is approx 6.5mm and tapers down to just over 4mm.

I am also worried about the prongs (there are only 4) but they look solid. My preference is for 6 since it is added security against losing the center stone. I haven''t had much experience with settings that are very detailed around the diamond. My concern is that all the detail around the diamond will drown the diamond out because the entire pavilion won''t be visible, only snipets here and there making the diamond look smaller than it is. Any advice on this setting and how I can work in a wedding band....

Confused.
