Good morning...

I've been looking for a stone/ring for some time and have found a private seller with a ring that is of interest. My plan is to find a quality stone or a ring with a quality stone and have it transferred to the setting of my choice. I am no expert and know very little about diamonds/grading/pricing, and have cobbled together a layman's conceptual understanding. That said, the seller provided me with an appraisal from an independent gemologist containing the following attributes:

  • Weight: 2.06 carats
    Round Brilliant cut
    8.35-8.42 x 4.81MM
    Natural Diamond - Not enhanced
    Clarity: SI-2
    Color: H
    Fluorescence: None
    Table: 66%
    Crown Height: 10%
    Crown Angle: 29-30 degrees
    Girdle: Ext. Thin to Medium
    Pavilion: 45%
    Depth: 57.4%
    Cutlet: Small
Symmetry: Slight misalignment of crown/pavilion facets, slightly misshapen facets, good
    Polish: Fair, abraded facet junctions

Any estimates (and basis) of the following for the stone would be very much appreciated and helpful:
A. Jeweler wholesale price (what a jeweler would pay to purchase the stone)
B. Private party retail price (what price I could expect from a private party sale)
C. Jeweler retail price (what price I could expect to pay at a jeweler)

Thank you for your time.

Well I am no expert either but from the information given this appears to be not well cut. Not high color or clarity. I'm not sure that you could recut and polish this diamond to make it more attractive looking. Personally I would pass on this one. It is two carats so it is worth something but unless I had a pretty good idea that it could be recut into something smaller but more attractive I would pass. I am not sure if it fits into your plans as a high quality diamond, but I cannot see this diamond with my own eyes. Perhaps it looks better in person than on paper. I would find a appraiser and pay him to do his appraisal and ask him for his thoughts on the value or whether it was worthy to make an offer. Whether it could be recut. A good appraiser could save you thousands here. I hope that this helps :wavey:

From the specs that you listed this is a poorly cut diamond and will have poor light performance. I'd pass

EDIT: sorry you didn't ask our opinion of the diamond only what a fair price would be....that's very difficult to say. An independent appraiser in your area would be able to answer those questions for you much better than we could. You could enter the info into a search engine though and see what you come back with for price. You will have to compare to like diamonds though and the same lab. For instance if this is an GIA stone, then compare only to GIA, if it's EGL to EGL stones, if it's uncerted then compare to other uncerted stones. Likewise you will have to compare to similar cut diamonds. I'll take a quick look and see if I can find something comparable if you'd like.

just one more question, you mentioned this was a private sale, and I see that you posted that it was a round brilliant but do you know if it's an modern round brilliant or an early round brilliant? I'm wondering if with the problems with it's symmetry if it isn't an older cut.

Thank you for the replies...

The ring is not new, it's definitely an older ring--not sure of it's age; however, the seller mentioned that she put it in storage after her husband passed.

That said and assuming I go through my own appraisal process, any guesses to the values below?
A. Jeweler wholesale price (what a jeweler would pay to purchase the stone)
B. Private party retail price (what price I could expect from a private party sale)
C. Jeweler retail price (what price I could expect to pay at a jeweler)

Thank you.

The table is very large and the stone is somewhat shallow.

You need to pay for an appraisal from a very reputable independent appraiser. Without having the stone in hand and just on here we can't give you what you need.https://www.pricescope.com/appraisers This will help you find a local appraiser.

I suggest you meet the seller at the appraiser's office and see what they say.

That said, no amount of money would make me buy that stone. Period. The end. It's a poorly cut poorly performing diamond and is a BAD buy, at any price unless you are willing to have it recut and lose the 2 carat mark (which is a bad idea unless you get it for 4k).

I agree with Gypsy. I wouldn't want to wear such a sizeable stone that wouldn't look good. I'd pass too. Even if I only had to pay $1,000 for it.

Thank you to those who posted sincere replies. I really do appreciate the very upfront opinions. I will use them in my evaluation of the stone.

I am merely seeking an opinion on pricing though and already have an appointment scheduled for an appraiser. Before meeting with him and the seller, it would be very helpful if anyone could supply a very honest ballpark estimate of wholesale, private-party, and retail pricing. I would like a larger stone; however, as you've probably seen before, budget is an issue.

If not and that is not the purpose or intent of the forum, my apologies given it's my first post.

Thank you.

Hello and welcome to PS! The appraiser would probably be your best bet in helping to determine pricing on this stone. You can look for comparable stones based on carat weight, color and clarity but you won't be able to make a price determination because you would not be comparing cut specs to the cut of this stone.

Unfortunately, all we can really tell you is that the numbers from this stone are no where near ideal and that the diamond - when compared to well cut stones - will be dull and flat. A two carat stone is a generous size; however, it is not desirable with poor cut and possible (SI2) inclusions that can be seen with the naked eye. If you have the opportunity, go out and see some really well cut stones. Jared's carries a Peerless line that are AGS0 stones meaning that these stones are wonderfully cut for light performance. I mention Jared's as a possibility because many people have those stores near them.

Best of luck to you - my best advice is to educate yourself as much as possible and shop around as much as possible to learn about your own tolerances in cut, color and clarity. It's a large purchase and one you don't want to make unadvisedly.
